The biggest difference today between schools like us, Bama, UGA, and others is that we all used to have backups that could likely beat schools like Vandy, Indiana, Texas Tech, etc.

Now, with all our backups wanting to hit the portal every year, we can't sustain the talent top to bottom like we used to. The portal helps stack talent at the top of the depth chart, but the bottom just isn't the same.

We're replacing 4 and sometimes 5 star recruits with average G5 guys. It's the way of the world, but it has led to college football being unrecognizable.

Correct. Besides all this other stuff, have to have injury luck and great talent evaluation skills

Some school out of the 100+ in the nation will navigate this pretty well.

Might as well be Kiffin.

You might even see schools focus the 20 million on 75 players vs 85.

105 might never be a thing.

Does anyone have a list of who we have on our team that's not in the portal?
25 guys maybe?

This isn't just an LSU problem, it's everyone's now.

A big issue that's stirring the whole thing is that when you hit the portal you're instantly worth double what you would have been if you stayed put. Would be nice to see schools try to adopt more of a model of paying a little bigger for player retention rather than acquisitions for overpriced guys leaving their schools.

That is why there are no dominant teams.

If this final 4 is any indication, it’s brought some parity to the sport at least.

HS recruiting is almost pointless unless you're bringing in a composite 5-Star recruit that will be a Day 1 impact.

These kids arent sitting around while you constantly bring in portal guys to play in front of them. They want to play and develop ON THE FIELD.

Maybe college should just go to the 53 player roster size like the NFL.

How is the current situation remotely sustainable?

Money is coming in from donors/businesses.

No one will keep donating that amount of money every year.

Maybe 2 more years and this NIL shite will get reduced drastically.

It has absolutely ruined the aura of college football. No loyalty. No pride.

Without change, death of college football will happen sooner rather than later

I just had to talk a friend off the ledge because just about every signing LSU gets, he doesn’t like because they come from inferior schools to the SEC. Like the kid from Hawaii for example.
Had to explain that we don’t live in that world anymore. All top schools are littered with players from smaller conferences now.

It’s a different mindset now.

No one is building depth though. That's just the new times we live in. Gone are the days when a top team's backups are better than most team's starters. No reason for a backup to stick around when there are teams with wads of cash to give them to start elsewhere.
