Or is there a reason why we’re pirating these oil tankers?
No troll, I’m genuinely curious. 2 time Trump voter here. I come in peace

Edit: 3 time Trump voter. My memory is fading

Sanctions are in place. It's not just random takeovers.

I honestly have been busy with sports and have attempted to ignore actual issues in our world. That would be a good reason though. Thanks

OP asked a real question. This response is from fantasy land. No one has even suggested that the oil in the tankers was ever owned by a specific US based corporation. Come on, dude, don't be ridiculous.

That’s right just looking for an explanation. Trying to educate myself. Downvotes are probably deserved. I’ll take my beating

I’d have no problem with pirating ships. The world has been taking from the US for at least my whole adulthood since I’ve been paying attention and paying taxes. I’ve taken a break from politics, but what’s currently happening has peaked my interest again. I’m all for gaining more oil and lowering gas prices. Frick Russia and Venezuela

Edit: just to add, I think there’s absolutely no reason why we shouldn’t take what we want. We have the best and largest military in the world, it’s about time we use it to get what we want. We elected Trump to turn things around. We were shelling out money by the buttloads to Ukraine. Now we’re taking it back and daring anyone to stop us. I like it

The 2007 Orinoco Belt Takeover:

Chávez cranked up royalties, taxes, and then forced foreign companies to give majority control (60%+) of heavy-oil projects to state-owned PDVSA or get out. Most companies (like Total, BP) negotiated and stayed as minority partners. Chevron did the same and is still there today (as of 2026, the only major US player operating, pumping ~150k barrels/day under a US license).

But ExxonMobil and ConocoPhillips said "f**k that," refused the terms, and pulled out. Venezuela seized their assets outright.

Exxon ? Sued at ICSID (World Bank tribunal); initially sought billions, got awarded ~$1.6 billion in 2014 (tribunal said the expropriation itself was legal but compensation too low). Venezuela has dragged feet on full payment; as of recent claims, still owes hundreds of millions.

ConocoPhillips ? Bigger win: ICSID ruled the expropriation unlawful and ordered Venezuela to pay ~$8.7 billion plus interest in 2019. Venezuela appealed and lost; payment still largely outstanding.

You aren't actually suggesting that oil in a tanker today was owned by a US based oil and gas company in 2007? Has it been in the tanker for 18 years?

CITGO has a major refinery in Louisiana. That's the Venuzulan national oil company. Are we taking them over too?

ICSID (World Bank tribunal)

'Frig that. There is no way a US corporation should ever go to a International Court if the US corporation has been wronged. That is pretty much admitting the US answers to a higher court.

Send in the military and take care of the problem. Once it is recognized as the only way a US corporation will respond when wronged, there will be far less trouble.

These tankers are turning off their transponders or using fake ones in order to conceal their locations/points of origin. These tankers belong to “shadow fleets” that move oil between countries that are under sanctions in direct violation of said sanctions. By taking these tankers, Trump is enforcing the sanctions against those regimes and cutting off their supplies of revenue.

Shadow fleets have been the only lifelines propping up Venezuela, Iran, and to a lesser extent Russia. Oil from Venezuela keeps Cuba afloat.

By taking out these shadow fleets, Trump has completely cut off the money supply to Iran’s Republican Guard Corps. As a result, Iran’s regime is completely collapsing. Without Venezuelan oil flowing, the new government will capitulate to US demands. Without oil flowing into Cuba, their economy will completely collapse, giving the US an opportunity for regime change. Same goes for Nicaragua with Manuel Noreaga.

By Trump going after the shadow fleets of oil tankers, he is essentially removing all of the geopolitical threats to the U.S. and Israel from the chessboard in both the Americas and the Middle East. Seeing as those nations are also in debt to China, debts that now will not be paid back, it also hurts China as well. They lose several nations that previously were beholden to them.

Trump has thrown the fake “rules based order” out the window and replaced it with real politik, reminding the rest of the world that they exist at the US’s benevolence. Trump is ignoring the rules that restrained America from dealing with direct threats to its hegemony, and is now eliminating those threats with record speed and efficiency.
