24 hours in Memphis…

I get it, they have unsafe areas etc… so does most cities in our country.

Looking to experience a few different things and explore a new city/area.

Food recs please?

Things to do recs please?

Appreciate all insights.

(Also, anything that also may be south of Memphis in Oxford etc as well pass through there as well so my son can see Ole Miss campus)

It’s not a nice city but the history is palpable. You’ll generally be fine downtown. A lot of the city is absolute shite but you will have little to no occasion to go into those areas.

Lots of music museums .. Stax and sun records are a must. Music itself in Memphis is sadly pretty weak. But Wild Bills is a good blues club.
Civil rights museum is chilling , the MLK bedroom is preserved like it was yesterday. The Main Street area it’s located in is pretty walkable and nice, lots of stores to poke your head into.

Plenty of good casual eats.. Gus’s is an absolute must. Rendezvous is controversial but I think it’s a cool place full of kitsch, and I personally like dry rub. If you’re in Memphis for the first time you have to go.
Memphis is a great dive bar city. Alex’s Tavern near Rhodes College is a classic. Mollie Fontaine Lounge is a great cocktail bar in a Victorian mansion.

Downtown is very walkable and plenty safe during the day. Walk along the river/bluff.
Peabody ducks are kind of a cliche but you should go and get a drink in the lobby.

Memphis has a pretty good zoo in the midtown neighborhood. Check it out and wrap it in with a trip to Bbq shop. Midtown is one of the better more interesting neighborhoods in Memphis.

There’s a nice new hotel rooftop cocktail bar in the cooper young area called Tiger and Peacock above the Memphian Hotel. Cooper Young is a stones throw from U of M. It’s a neat, kind of weird neighborhood.

Great insight!! Still driving up.

We ended up getting a room at the pyramid. So will take advantage of the shuttle service to downtown etc.

Appreciate all the help.

Agree with Gus’s and BBQ Shop (prefer both for lunch) and Rendezvous (for dinner).

Also like Huey’s for lunch.

Zoo is very nice.

I should have mentioned Beale. it’s a more sterilized Bourbon for better or worse. It can be fun when there’s good game day energy but it’s not exactly peak culture.. Silky’s is Memphis’s Pat O Briens and is usually my only stop. There’s a burger place called Dyers nearby if you need late night food.

Will third Rendezvous. Never had a bad meal there. The Peabody ducks are something different to see. We typically go to Silky O'Sullivans if we're looking to kill some time, it's on Beale Street (the Bourbon Street of Memphis). The Orpheum is nice if there is a concert going on that y'all are interested in. Graceland is worth a stop if you've never been.

As far as Oxford - stopping by the Square is a must. There is paid parking meters around the Square, or you can park in the parking garage just off the Square for free.

You could also stop by William Faulkner's home (Rowan Oak). I'm not sure if the home itself will be open, but you can walk around on the grounds. There is also a trail through the woods between his house and campus that is worth the walk, depending on how much time you have.

When we go to campus on the weekends we'll typically park in the Circle - it's near the Grove, Lyceum, etc. and is the nicest part of campus in my opinion. Also near the football stadium if you walk to down to it.

Lots of good food options - not sure when y'all will be in town, but I'll list a few recommendations below:

Big Bad Breakfast (breakfast, obviously)

Boure (lunch/supper) (on square) - always my recommendation if you have a group that isn't sure what they want to eat - they have a little bit of everything - never had a bad meal.

Ajax (on square) - southern comfort food

Proud Larry's (on square) - good pizza, pasta, burgers, etc.

Saint Leo's (on square) - italian

South Taco Depot (on square) - really good taco's, burrito's, etc.

Blind Pig - good bar food, good place to get drinks.

For drinks - we like going upstairs to City Grocery (on square), or to Circle and Square.

If you have any Oxford specific questions just let me know!

Skip rendezvous- it’s so overrated. It’s pretty meh for me

Great time to visit the OM campus. Not many people in town so you can explore and actually see it all and get a feel for it

Game weekends are horrible for trying to see everything .

Hope you have a great visit.

Here now for the Liberty Bowl. Wife was here a few years ago (this is my first trip) and she said downtown is a lot less sketchy this go around. Heavy military presence around Beale has probably helped with that. We were down there for the parade today and probably saw between 50-100 reservists walking the street (along with FBI & other federal agents).

We did Peabody yesterday and it’s an enjoyable little experience. Had Rendezvous for lunch and it was good. Went to Sun Studio today and enjoyed it. Cool to be in the same studio that Elvis & Cash recorded in.

Went to a little Japanese bakery this morning (Sweet Musings) that had some interesting pastries.

It's been ages since I've been to Memphis, and I know Mud Island is a shell of what it used to be. When I was there they had a pretty nice museum about the river with immersive exhibits of river boats, civil war gunboats, etc. They also had a walkable map of the lower Mississippi River.

As others have posted, Oxford is a decent college town to visit. If you take I-55 up, when you leave Oxford take MS-7 due north then I-22 at Holly Springs. That will get you into Memphis at the Germantown/Collierville end of town... the nicest end.

When you are near the River visit Chickasaw Heritage Park (aka DeSoto Park). On one side of it is the Memphis Metal Museum dedicated to fine art metal-smithing. LINK

People argue at length as to whether the Rendezvous in the ally next to the Peabody is a great BBQ place. It is definitely a legit traditional place that survived the near death of downtown Memphis. A 3rd generation of the Vergos family own and operate it. It's dry ribs spice mix has the family's roots, Greece and New Orleans. I hear the lamb ribs when they have them are outstanding.
