Was a mistake from the beginning. Without Jayden Daniels, he wouldn't even have made it to 2025.

Obviously. He did bring him in though and JD improved here tremendously, so credit there.

It could have been worse. See Auburn and Florida.

The fans ought to be cut some slack about that. On paper, he was the best we could’ve gotten.

I shudder to think of the BK era if he didn’t luck into a literal superhuman QB

On paper it was a good hire. Just happened to be bad timing hiring an old school ceo type coach right when nil blew up and turned cfb into the Wild West. Players are mercenaries now might as well hire one for a coach and see how the cards fall.

What does that even mean? “On paper it was a good hire”. On paper? No. It was a horrible hire. Paper or no paper.

Ironically, without Nuss he would still have a job!

Eh-not exactly.

I think most fans said "Hmmm, ok I wasn't expecting that but he has done well in the past. I guess I'll give him a chance."

At least that's how it was for me. After Jayden left, Kelly checked out. Win or lose, he knew he'd draw a substantial paycheck.

Glad it's over with.

Hot take but I think we just plain got unlucky with BK. Second winningest coach in college football at the time if I’m not mistaken (Edit: not sure might’ve been Ferentz). Brought limited ND roster to playoffs and wanted to challenge himself by coming to SEC but with NIL/transfer portal this is turning more and more into a younger mans game. Almost like he past his prime the day we hired him.

He had a good resume' as a HC when he was hired. I wasn't thrilled but I was like "Ok, well we should be ok. I'll give him a chance."

I didn't see it as a home run but I also didn't see it as a terrible hire either.

In hindsight, what was terrible was the contract. But that's in the rear view mirror now so I'm looking forward to next season.

Kelly was a coach with a winning record everywhere he had been. It was kind of out of left field but Woodward’s reasoning was understandable. He could recruit more talent here than at nd due to the limitations there. Turns out he didn’t put effort in, was a first grade a-hole, and didn’t win enough games to stay employed here. The hire made some kind of sense on paper but it flat out didn’t work.

There were reasons to think it may work. But no one except some Notre Dame people were saying he’d mailed it in. And he really did seem to care less and less every year he was here. We essentially gave him a golden parachute for his retirement. I doubt he works again. He used us big time LOL
