If you ever have any doubts about the Beatles not being the best, this line in Eleanor Rigby should bring you back to reality. Amazing lyrics in that song.

"Crabalocker fishwife, pornographic priestess, Boy you've been a naughty girl, you let your knickers down".

And in her eyes, you see nothing
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years
No sign of love behind the tears
Cried for no one
A love that should have lasted years

So, she wears too much makeup? It’s a nice lyric, but nothing profound. Please don’t take this personally, Beatles lovers.

I think Paul meant keeps her dentures in a jar.

Hate the song; hate the Beetles.

I don’t think that’s what the lyric is referring to.

There’s an interview online with Paul and he says it’s referring to a wrinkle cream moisturizer that older ladies used to use. But it gives the same imagery as makeup. Why does she bother if she doesn’t see anyone and lives a lonely existence.
I love the Beatles but they often admitted that they really just liked word play and people often read too much into their lyrics.

That's not what this means. The song is about loneliness, and the average everyday person that it affects. Eleanor Rigby works at a church, and "puts her face on" to greet people coming into the church, and hopefully, she will meet a special person. Her life is sadness. The face that she keeps at the door is a mask for her sadness.

Nothing to add to this thread, except the statue of Elenor Rigby is 40 steps from our Cajun restaurant in Liverpool, SuSu’s New Orleans Kitchen.
