Replacement of Highway 90 bridges at MS-LA state line faces another delay

The plan to fix five deteriorating bridges on Highway 90 at the Mississippi-Louisiana state line is stalled again because a federal program that could fund the project has not reopened since the government shutdown earlier this year, a lawmaker said.
Louisiana state leaders intended to apply for the money this fall. The state’s transportation department has estimated it will cost between $150 million and $350 million to reopen the bridges, which have been closed for more than three years.
Now lawmakers say they hope the grant program will open in January. “We share your frustration,” Louisiana State Rep. Stephanie Berault, R-Slidell, said last week. “We are hopeful this will get done soon.”
The 3-mile stretch from Pearlington into Louisiana closed in May 2022 after inspectors realized the 1930s-era bridges were not safe. Louisiana lacks the money to replace them and does not know when they will reopen.

Those bridges have been out for years.
Did they elaborate on why they waited till now to apply for funding?
Did they consider fixing the bridges and find funding in arrears to offload some cost?
You know, like put the citizens first kinda thing?

what's nuts about the length of time on these bridges being out is that is a hurricane evacuation route. they've been lucky as frick nothing has come through

I hope something can be done.
I need an alternative route than I-10 when some idiot crashes on the I-10 Pearl River bridge.
But why is this state so dependent on funding of today’s needs, we don’t have a rainy day fund for highways and regularly update and replace bridges that are beyond their life expectancy and safety needs.
Coming from Lafourche and Terrebonne parishes this need is finally starting to be addressed in some areas.
The big issue is that we have bridges that were built decades ago for a million dollars or a few hundred thousand, now those bridge replacement projects start in the neighborhood of 20 million dollars due to changes in construction materials and safety.
Then there are delay when they finally get built.
Fun fact, the Bourg Company Canal Bridge which finally opened in May or June of this year still has yet to receive its traffic light. Mind you the bridge was over a year behind schedule and there was an existing hurricane rated bar at the intersection. DOTD needs to get its head out of its own arse.

Yep, it’s government malpractice to not have US 90 open.

Those boosters that moved money from their “replace a bridge I never use” fund to the “Brian Kelly buyout” fund must be pissed.

Louisiana sucks but shouldn’t the federal government be more proactive in making sure their US highway routes are functional and open.

Clearly we can live without these bridges. Can we spend the money on roadways that are actually used?

It's literally the only thing that 95% of Americans agree the federal government SHOULD be doing with our tax dollars. Therefore, they refuse to do so.

LSU Football and TAF donations do not pay for street repairs.

But Gov. Jeff has a radio ad out stating that he has a plan to repair hundreds of bridges in the state.
How long has he been elected ?
