Great horned owls

This is a partial repost from the OT lounge. Though it might get more traction here.
We're staying at my parents house way out in the woods in WesternNC. Last night I hear two geart horned owls singing to each other down in the hollar.
So I had a bluetooth speaker with me and found a great horned owl call on YouTube. I managed to call them in within 50-75' of the back deck. Only the 2-3rd time in my life I've seen one in the wild. The big guy was ready to throw down!
Later I found out mated pairs sing to other like this and establish their territory. They lay their eggs in Mid Feb and the owlets hatch in mid-late March.

Speaking of owls, I seen (which I assume to be) a great horn owl feeding on a dead rabbit in one of our plots last week. I could be totally wrong but it was a large owl that looked like it had horns with the way its feathers on head were situated. He/she only fed for a lil bit while the sun was coming up.
I am currently looking at a lil bitty owl sitting on a limb bout 80yds in front of me.

Itty bitty could be a screech owl. 18" inches or so great horned.

It’s facing me, I’d say lil smaller than 18”.

I have an owl that lands in the big oak tree I sit in often. He's done it 3 times this year already. Doesn't see to bother him that he's 10 fee from me.

I know the Great Horned Owls that hang around where I live, LOVE cats.

I've only heard singles and it's always amazing to me how quiet they are compared to Barred.

I saw a pair years ago in the hole of a rotted out cypress tree while crappie fishing in peedee lake north of Schlater, ms

Pretty unethical to do this to owls during mating season. They already have enough stress.

For about a decade we had a pair that used our water oak and a poplar in our neighborhood park for nesting. Those 2 trees came down about 6-7 years ago and they have been scarce since, but not vanished. random cat carcasses in early am were the occasional door prizes they left behind,

They are in almost every neighborhood in Charlotte.
When they take off, you can out hear them.
Like stealth bombers.

In my defense, I didn't have this information until it was done. It was a brief interaction.

I've got a pair in my neighborhood that call to each other. We'll, they did all summer. Haven't heard them in a while now that I think about it.
One gets in this very tall pine tree in my yard and one is down the hill at the other end. I managed to see the one in my pine tree one night with a flashlight but I would hear them all the time. Owls are awesome.

I love all birds of prey but especially owls.
I spend much time hiking and camping and I run into Barred Owls everywhere and I mean EVERYWHERE. The four ponds behind the house are loaded with Barreds.
I never see Great Horned or Eastern Screech Owls and I'm not sure why.
