Where did Kelly go wrong with the offensive line?

Kelly had several lineman drafted for years while at Notre Dame. Why didn't that translate here?

Schedule, did you see those OL when they played Bama & Clemson. DL in the South are just as big but twice as fast/quick twitchy as they like to say.

I heard somebody on here awhile back say that Woodward forced Kelly to keep Brad Davis on staff being his was a local BR native.

I can't name a team that's not somewhat disappointed with their Oline this year.
It may be the hardest group to get playing as 1 unit. Regardless of their "star" ratings.

Kelly benefited from Notre Dame’s not being in a conference and playing mediocre schedules year after year. They got crushed in big games.

He probably had more talented OLinemen at LSU than he did at ND. Bad OL coaching, and bad offensive play calling can make any OL look bad. Just like an offensive genius (Brady, Kiffin) can make an average OL look better.
On paper LSU's OL should be way better than Ole Miss, but there is zero doubt you would take the production of Ole miss this year over LSU.

The OP got a bunch of smartass answers but it is a good question.The OL and TE's he had drafted under his watch was awesome. When he was hired 9 out of 10 LSU fans would have said that his history with OL and TE's was what had them excited about the hire. The dropoff in this facet of his coaching was stupendous.

I think his big mistake was expecting too many guy with 0 real experience to step up and be SEC quality players
We returned 1 starter who sucked and we took in 2 OL transfers 1 being a pretty meh Northwestern player.
And it’s a hard balance between going hard after the portal and actually playing the guys you liked out of HS but you have to give yourself options
if linda reminds me of 2024 with the Baseball team.
we weren’t that agressive in the portal because we assumes Kling and Peterson were going to take that next step and be big contributors and they just didn’t. and since then Jay has gone out and loaded up and figured the best bats will play and we’ll find a place for them if there are more than enough

As someone who has played from HS to college, you get little film on O-line being truly challenged. Its easy to select the 6'5 310 guy as a 5 star. Besides playoffs (assuming his team makes it), unpadded camps (these dont prove shite, DL gets all the advantage here), and the all star game, you get little film on these guys
Its very difficult to evaluate due to limited true value film. We spend the entire year not giving up a sack, blowing smaller guys off the line, and get hyped up. College is a different animal. Some can handle the massive ramp up in challenge, some cant.
Whats inexcusable is dumb penalitys like Curne committed all years in a panic, and his total meltdown. I know moving from guard to tackle is asking a lot, but he didnt step up, he collapsed under the pressure... literally. Never seen a d1 lineman get trucked on a pass block. Thats demasculating.
O line is more skilled than most know, some get by in size and aggression with lots of film against 220 lhs d lineman. Evaluation is important, and only a very experienced offensive lineman coach should be makijg recruitment calls who understands all of the above. My college coach was a clown.

That’s not a very good explanation when a bunch of Kelly’s offensive linemen from Notre Dame went on to star in the NFL. Obviously they were more than good enough to play in the SEC if they were NFL caliber.
NFL defensive lineman >>>>> SEC defensive lineman.

How was this carried out through the off-season and training camp?
What skillsets did each OL have and who had input on how that was to come together?
Kelly, Sloan, Davis - even Flint, were significant contributors to the train wreck we saw this year.
