"Jetway Jesus" - More passengers faking wheelchair need, walk off plane upon landing

Airlines have recorded a 30% yearly increase in wheelchair assistance requests at bigger airports, according to the International Air Transport Agency (AITA), a trade group representing airlines around the world, with executive offices in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Wall Street Journal, in a piece this week about the issue, quoted a passenger who said his recent flight was delayed when 25 wheelchair passengers held up the boarding process.

Social media users are blasting so-called "Jetway Jesus" and "miracle flight" occurrences, accusing more and more airline passengers of scamming the travel system by using wheelchairs to dodge lines and board planes early — then walking off their planes unassisted once they land at their destinations.

"Once the flight is over, [these travelers] leave the plane unassisted and [don't] need wheelchairs — in effect, [the] flights miraculously cure these people."
quote:
"The airline told me that when connecting at O'Hare [in Chicago] — when you have to travel a long distance in a short amount of time — you should ask for a wheelchair."

Reminds me of all these 'disabled veterans' i see parking in handicap spots and a dude that looks like prime arnold Schwarzenegger gets out.

There's nothing worse than a handifat who needs "assistance" getting on the plane first then waddles their way up the jet bridge with a line of people behind them because they have to stop and catch their breathe and are too fat for anyone to get around them. Especially bad when you land somewhere at altitude because their fatasses are sucking wind too.

the lack of pride in people never ceases to amaze me.

Unless you are in first/business class, I really don't understand the need to sit in an airplane seat even longer.

I tore up my knee on vacation a few years ago. The most embarrassed I’ve been in a long time was being wheeled around a couple of airports on my way home.
I guess some people have no shame.

IMO, vets should have front row parking anyway.
Some of those are mental illness and PTSD guys.

My wife broke her arm snowboarding and even after an 8 hour surgery with 3 fresh plates holding her humerus together she still made the walk to the arse end of SLC and refused the wheel chair.

So glad I break out the G800 for flights instead of flying commercial.

The last time I was on an airplane I saw a guy argue with airline employees about early boarding for him or someone in his party due to disability. I also saw an unusual number of people with service dogs that were "designer" breed types like labradoodles who had zero training. Knocking on wood - never been on a flight that's been delayed because someone is acting up pre flight.

This has been an issue for years and done of the reasons Southwest is going to assigned seating. Apparently every flight from NYC to Florida is slammed with this people.

Hot take. If mandated - these are anti-capitalistic.

Emotional Support Dogs are the dumbest thing. Any vet can write the paperwork.

All the people in those pictures look really old.
A lot of old folks and sick or disabled people are capable of standing up and walking a few feet, but that doesn't mean they can walk across an airport or stand for a long time.

"Emotional support" animals haven't been allowed on flights since 2021.

Got stuck on a connecting flight out of Dallas to Memphis the day after a Historic Black Church convention, I guarantee there was not another wheel chair available in the airport that morning. I stopped counting after they rolled number 30 down the jet way while the rest of us A group watched, I was like A5 and the first row of empty seats was at the emergency exit
