He said NYC buses would cost THREE.
quote:

The NYC subway and local bus base fare is increasing from $2.90 to $3.00, effective January 4, 2026, part of a larger MTA fare and toll hike for 2026, which also raises express bus fares to $7.25 and introduces new weekly/monthly pass options, with OMNY users benefiting from a permanent 7-day fare cap, as the MTA phases out MetroCards.

Key Changes for NYC Transit (Effective Jan 4, 2026):

Base Fare (Subway & Local Bus): Up 10 cents to $3.00 (from $2.90).

Reduced Fare: Increased to $1.50 (from $1.45).

Express Bus Base Fare: Now $7.25 (up from $7).

Weekly Express Bus Cap: $67 for unlimited rides.

OMNY 7-Day Fare Cap: A permanent rolling cap of $35 for subway/bus rides, rewarding frequent users.

MetroCard: Sales will stop by December 31, 2025, pushing riders to OMNY.

Why the Increase?

The MTA cites rising operational costs, aiming for minimal increases (around 2%) while improving service, according to a September 30, 2025 press release.

Other Changes:

Commuter Rail (LIRR/Metro-North): Monthly/weekly tickets increase by up to 4.5%.

Family Fare: Expanded to include children up to age 17 for $1 each on commuter rail

I guess his election is not going to cause the Convergence of the Spheres and end all life in New York as we know it.

Fares are not set by the Mayors office (and he isn't mayor yet anyway) but by the Governors appointees.

When Mamdani was going on about the free transit and Government run groceries the media stayed silent... Just a few months before Kansas City Missouri had tried both and it failed miserably.. Not a word from the media about the failure..

Somebody forgot to tell him, I guess…

Zohran Mamdani promises free buses for NYC. Here's a closer look at the plan and how it gets paid for.

CBS News New York- Zohran Mamdani made free buses one of his signature policy proposals during the New York City mayor's race, a campaign filled with ideas to make living in NYC more affordable.

Now that he has been elected as the city's next mayor, the self-proclaimed democratic socialist's work begins to turn the idea into action.

Zohran Mamdani's plan for free NYC buses

Back in the summer of 2024, the MTA was in the midst of a funding crunch that was exacerbated by a troubling problem - fare evasion. At the time, CBS News New York learned that nearly 50% of bus riders weren't paying, resulting in $315 million in lost revenue.

Mamdani, a Queens assemblyman, said people weren't paying because they couldn't afford it. He suggested making buses free and having the city and state reimburse the MTA.

"That's about $800 million a year, which may sound like a lot of money, and it is substantial, but in the context of a city budget that's north of $100 billion and a state budget that's north of $220 billion, this is just pennies," Mamdani said at the time.

While Mamdani's mayoral opponents were quick to criticize the idea, it resonated with a lot of New Yorkers.

How would the NYC free bus plan be paid for?

Mamdani told CBS New New York back in September that he would pay for free buses, along with his other democratic socialist policies, in part, by increasing the corporate tax rate to 11.5% -- the same as New Jersey -- and instituting a flat 2% tax rate for individuals earning $1 million or more.

"My vision for making the most expensive city in the United States of America affordable is actually one that benefits all of us," he said.

As mayor, he would need the help of Gov. Kathy Hochul and the state Legislature to raise taxes.

When asked about free buses on NY1 the morning after the election, Mamdani said, "We get to work on delivering them. That's what has to be the next steps here."

The mayor-elect made sure to point out he received endorsements during the campaign from the right people to start the process on many of his proposed policies.

"I'm proud to have the endorsement of Gov. Hochul, to have had the endorsements of Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie, Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins of the state Senate. These are also endorsements of an agenda of affordability, and I'm confident in delivering these same policies that we ran on for more than the last year," Mamdani said.

I guess the moral of the story is- never listen to silver tongued Socialists.

So pedestrian New Yorkers have to pay $3 to ride a bus and be in even more danger than if they were just walking?

Make this make sense.

Not likely since a lot of what he promised to the minions is controlled by the state, not NYC. The issue is that his minions voted for this anyway. 24 years after 9/11.
