Leaves staying on the trees longer

Anybody else noticing it this year? I’m in central Mississippi and seems the oaks still have a lot of leaves for this time of year. And we’ve had a couple hard freezes too.

My water oaks still have some leaves. The Red Oaks have hangers usually until the new leaves shoot in the spring.

I’ve remarked that to my wife as well.

When you say hard freeze, did the temp stay below freezing for a long time for just like 3 hours in the middle of the night?
If it gets back to 75 during the day most weeks and has rain regularly, the plants are gonna be fine

Have you had any big rainstorms since the freezes? I find that tends to mark the end, not dissimilar to azalea blooms.

Yes, I’ve noticed it too, I think it might be from a lack of wind and rain.

Yes…noticed this week. The oak across from me still has its leaves. Weird

Yep. My driveway is usually full with my neighbor’s sycamore leaves by now. They’re all still on the tree.

Oaks usually lose their leaves last and normally keep them into the winter, no?

obvious answer is the climate issues

Normally my red oaks have lost all of their leaves by now. They still have close to half of them still hanging on. I usually have all the leaves mulched up in the yard prior to Christmas. Not this year though.

It was very warm this year with more rain than normal.
Very little cold weather until very recently, trees basically all dumped at once this year. Which is unusual.
I would say it was a month later than normal, mostly due to the warm temps. Seasonal grass is still green somehow.
It just isn't staying cold long enough to really lower soil temps

Many oaks don't lose all of their leaves over the winter. It's always been like that.

I don't know about central Mississippi but typically in NWLA fall lasts until the first or second week of January.

It’s been pretty colorful.

Not in East Tennessee. I have Oak trees around my home. Usually many dead leaves hang on until Spring. The trees are bare already.

My maple finally dropped its last leaf and my azaleas had their last blooms, all this week.
