The total disregard for out of office replies is OOFC

I don’t know about yall but my MO when someone is out of office is not to continue emailing that person but to figure it out like I’m always forced to when this happens.
America could take a lesson from Europeans in this regard. Being out of office doesn’t mean shite these days

Who cares if they are emailing if you are not answering?

I want people to email me if they have a question or need something regardless of if I am in the office or not.

I’m referring to continue to follow up and disregard that a person is out of town when their auto reply says they are out. A problem has fallen to my lap because someone waited until last minute to request something and basically pretending the person doesn’t have an auto reply on. Based on the replies so far some people don’t believe in basic courtesy

I don't stop sending emails when OOO and don't expect people to either.
Your's or mine inbox is up to you how you want to handle.

On vacations, do you let your work laptop frick your wife in the hotel room bed while you post up in the cuck chair sending emails from your work phone?

My ooo lists my cell and says text me if urgent

I work part time but unfortunately have a lot of responsibilities
I refuse to check my email at home no matter what, if I feel like it, I’ll answer a text
If my boss texts, I answer

I have zero issues with people keeping me on emails or even asking questions while i'm OOO as long as they aren't being pushy for a reply. I'd rather not come back from vacation and be oblivious to whats going on.
I also understand that for some they don't want to be on the email chain about the mcflurry machine being broken every day also get BabyDik's complaints about the mcflurry tech not being on camera to walk him through the repair.

Just don’t look at email if you’re out of office. If you’re looking at email, aren’t you kind of working? It’s on you.

I’ve quite literally never had this happen and I work in an industry where you’re never really “off”
I’ll email people that I know are out so I don’t forget and it’s in their inbox when they get back. If they want to handle low hanging fruit while they’re out, that’s up to them. I prefer it that way so I’m not getting crushed when I come back.
If I really need something when someone is off, I call, and of course preface it with don’t do the heavy lifting, I just need “X” which should never take more than 5 minutes

I’m not giving every random a-hole who emails me my celly. Screw that.

This. If it’s important enough they will call.

How is that your problem?
So what you are saying is that someone that works for or with you disregarded an OOO, and instead of reading the OOO and contacting the next in line they continued to email the OOO expecting the OOO to take action?

I’ve never even set an out of office message. Internally, the people that know, know. Externally, if it’s that time sensitive I’ll coordinate to get it done or send the client an email from my phone “hey I’m out of office until X date, but I got your message. I’ll make sure we get that handled as soon as I get back”
It’s really not that hard.

Just want to have it teed up for when you get back or when you have a quick second.

Are you talking about the person that sends an email about something, then gets your OOO message stating you are out and when you will return. And during the specified window will send 2-3 other messages asking for a status update for the original email?

It’s not even clear what you’re complaining about.
At first it sounded like you were annoyed about receiving follow up emails when you’re out of office. To which I would say.. if you’re so bent out of shape about it, just don’t check your email.
Now it sounds like you’re complaining because Person A sent Person B multiple emails while they were out of office, received OOO replies but continued to wait for Person B to respond, and now you’re rushing to do.. something?.. because Person A ran out of time.
That’s an oddly hyper-specific thing to complain about as being “out of fricking control.” It also sounds like an issue of stupidity rather than lack of courtesy.
I will say this, though: People need to think about their out of office replies before they leave for vacation or whatever. If your automatic reply doesn’t have a return date (or says you’ll be back on 1/6/25 because you forgot to update it from last time), people have no idea whether their issues can wait until you get back. If your automatic reply says “please allow additional time for responses” without giving the name or contact of your backup, people may assume that means you actually intend to check your email and respond. If you simply set your “status” to out of office with no auto-reply, people have no idea whether you’re at a dentist appointment or on a beach in Cabo.

I always type mine out and say I will be out of office from the first day I'm out until the date I'm scheduled to be back, and that I will have limited access to emails. And leave contact info for specific items that are routine questions we get. If you need help with ABC, contact Sue, if you need help with XYZ, contact Bob, etc. Everyone at the office that needs me has my cell number, if they don't, it can wait.

You might need to know what happened while you were out.
