Axios: How Jeffries beat Johnson

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries adhered to a single principle to outflank Speaker Mike Johnson on extending the expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits:
Don't give an inch to Republican moderates looking for an escape hatch.
Why it matters: Jeffries got everything he wanted. Democrats will get a House vote on a three-year extension of the subsidies without any income caps or cost offsets.
One senior House Dem told us of leadership's thinking: "We're going to have to negotiate with the Senate, but you don't start from a place of weakness."
Between the lines: Jeffries was pressed by several of his centrist members to throw his support behind discharge petitions introduced by Reps. Josh Gottheimer (D-N.J.) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), senior Democrats said.
He held firm. In the end, Republicans — who tried and failed to attach ACA amendments to the bill the House passed tonight — came to Jeffries just as he hoped they would.
Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.), Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.), Rob Bresnahan (R-Pa.) and Ryan Mackenzie (R-Pa.) all signed on to Jeffries' petition earlier today.
That left some Republicans fuming. "Our team should've put in the compromise. Now we're voting for the worse one. It's just sort of dumb," said Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) of his own party leadership's strategic choices.
"We should put the best bill forward, now we're putting the worst bill forward. It doesn't make any sense," he added.

I like the vote. Let’s see who is bought and paid for by the insurance companies. That will make primary season that much easier.

Sounds like it's primary-ing time in Pennsylvania

Republican Congress, 2025.

Forgive ignorance on my part, but would Trump have to sign this bill? Or is this just budgetary action? And then would Trump still have to sign it. I feel like Trump should be pushed to just flat veto whatever they come up with.

Axios is always full of Democrat shite. Glory, glory, be unto Jeffries. He's a clown

Trump still has veto power...

I'm confused. I thought the House passed the GOP health bill without an ACA extension
House passes GOP health bill without extension
"GOP leaders unveiled the bill, known as the Lower Health Care Premiums for All Americans Act, last week. It would expand association health plans, lower premiums for some Affordable Care Act enrollees and enact reforms aimed at decreasing drug costs."

Jeffries didn’t out flank anybody. Republicans are pussies. Just vote no.

I'm just providing alternate views of what is happening.

I'm confused. I thought the Republicans held both Houses of Congress. I've read the summary a few times and I still can't understand how Jeffries has any "power" to do anything.
"Jeffries got everything he wanted." "He held firm." What does that mean, really? When Dems are in control, we never hear about Republican minority leaders doing anything like this...

Let's see what happens when the Senate version comes back. Not even Thune is dumbe enough to pass a bare extension.

I needed a good laugh.... Silly Axios... Dollar Store Obama can't beat his way out of a paper bag.

The clean ACA tax extension that democrats want will never pass congress. The win for Democrats is getting a vote on a clean extension of the tax extension, which Republicans will vote against, and Democrats will use that no vote in attack ads in 2026. There will be ads that ask if your ACA plan has gotten more expensive (which a lot will) and blame it on Republicans for voting against this.
If the House Republicans were more disciplined then this never would’ve made it to a vote

Lol it still would have to pass the senate if it passes. This is no huge victory.
Also, I thought Trump came out and backed the idea of extending the subsidies for a year or 2? Am I misremembering?

It depends. If they are from safe R districts then yes. However, if they are from purple districts, then they have to vote that way in order to hold the district and they are the most valuable R’s in the House.

There’s a reason why OP didn’t post a link. Old news that now fanfiction. House passed a bill and it wasn’t the Jeffries bill.

Which will work due to the combined factors of the ignorant average voter, the gimmedats, and white women.
