Why do people choose meaningless bowl games over expanding playoffs?

The argue against expanding college playoffs is “it will devalue games”
In this current environment, there is nothing more meaningless than non-playoff bowls.
We need to expand the playoffs and incorporate these sponsored bowls into the playoffs.

Stop.
We don't need a bunch of 9-3 teams and James Madison types in the field.
Bowl games are meaningless, but what isn't meaningless (or at least used to not be meaningless) was regular season games. A big part of what made college football fun was that one loss could possibly frick up your whole season, so every game felt larger-than-life.
The 12-team playoff already ruined that. The playoffs need to contract to 8 or back to 4, not expand.

Even in the four team playoff, the 3/4th's of the games were blowouts.

We need to go the opposite direction. Make all games before the semifinal at home stadiums. Who wants to travel to 4-5 neutral site games to follow their team? It would be incredible to have a game at a stadium where we would usually never have a chance to go to.

So you rather watch 6-6 teams play is a bowl game for absolutely no reason?
Yea, James Madison and Tulane will never win the playoffs but atleast the game has purpose and they players aren’t opting out.

Yes we need even more terrible teams and soulless corporate neutral site games. That is the magic fix to college football

Who gives a frick? It's a meaningless exhibition.
What does that have to do with 9-3 teams making the playoffs?

So you want meaningless playoff games instead of meaningless bowl games?

They are meaningless because they are usually between two very crappy to mediocre teams. The last thing the playoffs needs is more crappy teams in it than it already has.

do you think the playoffs are supposed to be for:
-determining the most deserving national champion
or
-our entertainment
If you think it's the latter then sure expand it all the way to 60 or 120 teams. If you have a brain though you would realize it's already too big and needs to get smaller.

One game has meaning and the other doesn’t

You're grossly missing the point.

Expand to 24
Top 8 get a Bye
Round 1 play in the week after CCGs, seeds 9-24, better yet, do away with CCGs and play the opening round that weekend.
Round of 16 goes the following weekend.
Final 8 played as they are today.

I'm against both.

Nah. Look at these imbalanced schedules across the Big Ten and SEC. Some face the gauntlet, others play 1-2 really tough teams.
14/32 NFL teams make the playoffs for this very reason. CFB has significantly more teams.
The difference between teams 9-24 isn’t all that big. With bowls dying on the vine, they need to create post season avenues for the fringe programs or the support will die down and CFB is the lifeblood of collegiate athletics, it funds everything.

We already have had coaches opting out of the playoffs in the second year of 12 teams

Bowl games are eventually done
Poor attendance and opt out of the best players will make bowl games eventually shut it down
