"Those goofy bastards are about the best thing i've got goin"
Between getting stuck places they shouldn't be, breaking out of their coop, and just general tomfoolery, they're fun as heck! And so low maintenance...
If you were ever on the fence on getting any, do it!

my neighbor has some that i watched while they were out of town this summer.
the damn things fell in love with me; they were waiting every morning when i got there; followed me the water faucet and drank from the hose while i filled up their water container, were waiting for me at night and filed one by one into their little coop and sometimes if they got there before me i would open the little window and stick a flashlight in trying to count them all.
so cute..too bad we have a fox and its killed almost all of them. my neighbor took care of the fox last night, though but i think they're down to a single hen.

When I made an automatic door to let them in and out of their coop, the safety mechanism to stop the door from lowering if one of them was standing in the doorway was the most difficult part to figure out.
Apparently there needs to be one because those dumb motherfrickers will stand there and get crushed in the 30 seconds it takes for the door to lower. The slowest guillotine in the world if you will.

shoot, that sucks!
yeah, when they hear me coming on my gator, they go crazy. i go out every night and give them a cup full of dried worms and seeds. They love that! i pour it out with a solo cup and if they're out running around and i need to get them back in their run, i go in the run and shake it a few times and they storm back in so fast it creates a dust cloud.
I have 11 mature chickens (1 rooster and 10 hens) and i have 5 that are about 8 weeks old that a friend hatched for me from my flock, it;s looking like that will be 1 rooster and 4 hens from that group, one of them is starting to get this dark green tail feathers..

we have the world's sweetest rescue chihuahua and he started going with me in the morning and at night to tend to them.
at first the chickens were TERRIFIED but after a week or so they were like "oh, hey" and he would just mingle around them drinking water with them and checking out their coop. they were so trusting.

We have about 50 chickens, of the 50 there's about 8-10 that have just decided they are free rangers. No matter what you do, they are getting out.
They have a ring leader...a white olive egger named Chickaletta. She is the funniest damn chicken I've seen, has way more personality than a chicken has any business having.
She will not lay her eggs anywhere that makes sense, she lays them on the porch. Usually right on the swing, or in a chair. She comes up to the back porch and messes with the cats through the window. She constantly talks to you, when we go down to throw our scratch corn she "helps" you throw it out.
Had a coyote almost get her one day mid day, caught it on camera. She got away missing some feathers but came out from under the porch bitching at us when we got home.

good grief.
They need to make a tv show about the ways chickens have died. Except instead of a 1000 ways they may need to bump it up to 100,000 ways. That show could run for 20 years.

I like them too. Trouble is, a possum or coon or Fox can wipe out your whole flock in just a couple of days.

I agree! I didn't realize how great they were until we got a flock. We have one that usually goes broody 2-3 times a year and so it feels like we're always adding to the flock. In the Summer, it's harder because the snakes like to eat the chicks (and eggs). But it's amazing watching those little boogers hatch out and follow momma around.
Right now I have a pretty mean 'boss bitch' who ran half the newer ones out of the coop at night so they're now tree chickens. No matter how many times we went out at night and snatched them out of the trees and tried to rehome them, they just want the trees more. We have around an acre fenced that is mostly wooded for their play yard. Everything likes to eat chicken, including chicken. They're the best garbage disposals I have and will love you for every morsel you give them. Especially meat. They're also pretty brutal establishing their pecking order.
I have a lawn chair in their area and sometimes we'll just sit and watch them do their thing. Pretty relaxing.

My daughter wanted chickens three years ago. So we took the plunge and became urban farmers. Got three that free range in a typical NOLA backyard all day. Somehow all three have survived. I love going in the backyard on a nice day, or even when it's raining, and just drink a beer and watch the yardbirds mess around. One seems blind, one is loud, and one is fat.

If you have a big enough property and want the chickens to free range safely (relatively), add a couple guineas to the flock. They'll protect the flock, and coop every single chicken every night. One will guard the door keeping the chickens in while the other runs around screaming and chasing the stragglers to the coop. Guineas are useless otherwise.
And yes, chickens will find many creative ways to die. For 6 months you'll have a healthy flock with no casualties, then BOOM, a quarter of them will die or disappear in various ways.
