...you've got home field locked up and there's nothing on the line for the last game. Except history. How would you handle it?

My son and I were talking about this today. (I've got both my sons steeped in the history and mythos of the early 70s Dolphins teams) We both agreed if that was today we'd call in the team captains and put it to them to decide. Chase history or rest players to maximize our chances for a Super Bowl run.

I like the idea of team vote, but ultimately in that situation you’re a freak accident away from ruining your season. I think I’d prefer to rest em, but It’s tough to think you’re throwing away a chance of rewriting the record book.

I'd be inclined to go for it.

Do they give a trophy away at the end of the year for best regular season record?

You're now telling your starting qb and whomevers to head into the playoffs with 3 weeks of having not played in a game.

No, but there's something greater than a SB trophy - immortality.

This exact situation showed the difference between the Brady-Belichick Patriots and the Manning Colts.

The Patriots were true glory hunters; they didn't shy away from history. They were known for being bold, taking risks, and pushing the envelope. Sure, they failed at reaching 19-0, but that had nothing to do with fatigue. Nothing you can really do about a helmet catch. The Patriot Way is what led them to 6 rings.

The Colts were notorious for playing not to lose. No season emblemized this more than 2009. Not only did management pull the plug despite the players wanting to go for 16-0, but this mentality crept up in the Super Bowl. After the goal-line stand late in the first half of the Super Bowl, the Colts could've gone for a late TD to get a 17-3 lead. Instead, they went conservative and the Saints ended up kicking a FG to cut it to 10-6. Then the surprise onside kick happened and the rest is history. There's a reason the Manning Colts didn't win more than one Super Bowl.

'07 Patriots went for it all, and kept their starters in to win the last regular season game vs. the Giants 38-35.

Now...I guess one could argue that being in such a fight vs. the Giants the last game of the RS may have caused them to show "too much" vs. them, but the same could be said for the Patriots getting the Giants' best looks too.

I think at 16-0, going into Week 18, you try to make that run at history.

Think a lot of it depends on how your team is made up.

Are you banged up and need the rest, are you rolling and don’t want to break the cycle of perceived momentum? Do you have certain players that you know are slow starters and wouldn’t do well with that much time off? Are you going to be in a dog fight with a playoff team or are you playing someone who had their season end a month or so ago?

I’d want to chase history if I knew I’d have two weeks off anyway if my team was relatively healthy.

You go for 17-0. New England didn’t win the Super Bowl, but people remember them going 16-0. Piss on the Miami Dolphins. Different era and less games.

Play the game, if it gets out of hand pull the players but I'd go for it.

Go for it. You’re competitors and you’ve already got the bye in your back pocket

Happy Indy didnt win it that one year bc that would of been rough. I still can't believe they didnt let them play in the last game of the regular season.

Someone's never seen Tin Cup.

Of course you go for greatness, ever time. That's the only way to achieve it.

Yep, if you let the captains vote and do as they wish and your starting qb gets injured for the entirety of the playoffs, the blame lands solely on one person and it isn’t one of the captains
