Late in the season Berry seemed to have stepped up as the number one in the backfield, but Durham was as close to a 1b as you could get. Kiffin will grab someone in the portal, and when that happens do you think Durham decides to leave? It’d be a shame because imagine what him and Harlem could do together with a real line.

I just haven’t seen anything explosive from Durham, he may have a top speed that’s fast, but it seems like it takes him 10 steps to get to full speed

That may work in the Sunbelt conference

Two RBs on the roster is the official count, not including Lindsey (per my other post). But I’m still betting big. He’ll see a ton of playtime next year.

He had a rough year and our OL was pretty bad, but this is fricking stupid.

Sunbelt backs don’t do what he did to SCar last year.

Probably transfer portal unless Kiffin really wants him. He has really bad vision and you're not coaching that sorry to say. This is partly why he looks slow. He can't see small holes while Berry could.

Durham was better than Berry by almost any metric you can find. He looked much healthier at the end of the schedule, too.

quote:

SEC RB Ranks Per PFF

Out of 26 Qualified RBs(over 60 carries)

3. Kewan Lacy 85.9
13. Caden Durham 76.0
26. Harlem Berry 67.0

in SEC Games

Durham - 63-369-5.9ypc
Berry - 69-281-4.1ypc

Durham started to look like himself on the backhalf of the schedule.

I like alot about the way Durham runs. As poster above, he needs to really work on that acceleration out of a 1-step. If he can do that he can do well in the scheme coming up.

Our outside run game was strictly based on option plays (no, not pitch option) where the default was to run between the tackles and 'bounce it' outside. We did not run GT pulls or stretch plays really. Because he lacks that acceleration out of a single step, this was a horrible scheme for him.

The other thing I think he needs to work on is staying square with contact, specifically arm contact. Emery had the same issue... they both get turned just enough to take them out of a crease/hole and into secondary contact instead of slipping through.

I do wonder if CLK thinks he is developable into what he's looking for.

The healthy back is productive, and right now Berry is the only one on the roster. Hopefully Durham recovers during the off-season and OL blocking improves.

Same thing could be said for Berry. He got off to a slow start on the year but you could see him getting better as he got more opportunity. He's way more explosive than Durham that's unquestionable right now.

Unless Durham has a major injury for 2 years in a row he has no top end speed at all for a verified 4.4+ guy. To make this worse, he's ultra hesitant on hitting small holes which makes him look super slow when he first touches the ball. He goes down at the change of the wind and doesn't show any power either.

PFF grade is for everything so it's easy to see why Berry falls there he was horrible blocking while Durham is way better here for example. Classic example of stats do not tell you the entire story. Not ready to give up on Durham personally because he wasn't helped by a historically awful OL. Berry looked like the best RB in the room though. Whether that's because Durham has a bigger injury than we know who can say.

Durham looked a step slow at the beginning of the season and as we found out in interviews he wasn’t really at full health which would explain it.

Durham and Berry in Kiffins offense at full health, should frightening for any team.

People dismiss stats when they do not fit their narrative or bias.

If Lacy comes here it’s going to cut his carries. He won’t be the featured back. I suspect he will probably stay and still have similar success.

You can also use stats to fit your narrative. It goes both ways. You don't think Berry get better as he saw more opportunities? Show his stats from first half of the season compared to back half. I'd say both Durham and Berry started to look better. Berry is also a true freshman. A bit unfair don't you think? Durham does all the little things way better like blocking. I think both can thrive under Kiffin if they both stay with a good OL.

You are comparing the wrong backs. You need to compare Lacy to Durham. That’s going to be his competition next year. Obviously you’d rather have 3 good running backs than 2. Lacy would be the best back on the roster and we’d be lucky to have him. Hopefully we get him. He’s still only 19 years old.
