We have “adopted” some outside cats. Momma has 2 babies and they’ve been coming to our house because we set up a den for them with food. This has been going on a month or two now without issue.

Today, a neighborhood dog (with a collar) showed up 3 times! And ate all the food before the cats could get to it.

I have a trail cam set up so I can see when they eat and when the dog comes by. This dog just seems to wander the neighborhood regularly without a care in the world. We are new to the area so don’t know all the neighbors yet. I have a suspicion he’s from this house that has a lot of junk on the lawn a few streets over. He usually runs off in that direction and I feel like I mostly see him over there when driving around.

LEGALLY what are my options? I’m going to try and figure out that that is actually where he lives and go talk to the owners and let them know I have their dog on camera coming into our property and eating our pets food. If they are indifferent or don’t stop him from doing so, what are my options?

Whatever you do, don’t let it get into any antifreeze.

If you leave food out then animals will eat it. What are you going to do when Racoons and Possums show up to eat the food as well, that is if the dog doesn't eat if first.

When you feed the cats, stand there and let them eat. If they don't, its fair game.

The cats are probably also eating at neighbors houses.

So an unsecured pet is eating your unsecured pets food? Hmmm

“Animal control, how may I help you”

“The dog in the neighborhood is eating the food for the stray cats (of which I have no idea if they’re carrying diseasss) I’ve been feeding”

We’ve had a possum that turned the feeder over a few weeks ago. Put a brick on top of it and no possum since then.

You must do what you feel is right, but having watched one of my own dog die from being poisoned, I will ask you to forego that option. I’d call AC and get the dog picked up.

Make sure and declaw them or take them inside permanently. Doing the latter will ensure your invasive species cats don't get their outside food eaten, and for God's sake get them neutered.

Pet cats are significant predators, killing billions of small animals annually, including vast numbers of birds (billions), mammals (billions), and millions to hundreds of millions of reptiles and amphibians, with butterflies and insects also heavily preyed upon, impacting biodiversity worldwide as they hunt for sport, not just food, making them a leading cause of wildlife mortality.
On top of that they scratch up expensive vehicles and shite their disgusting toxoplasmosis turds into people's vegetable gardens and their childrens' sandboxes.

Your pet cats are, quite literally, defined as an invasive species. Get them inside or have them euthanized. Problem solved.

Put up a fence or continuous calls to animal control. Leash laws only work with responsible pet owners.

Or…. Take the cats in as a pet and spend the money

I actually have an issue with the cat ladies in our neighborhood... increasing the stray cat population and those cats shittin in my yard and digging up my beds.

All strays are trashy.

If you don’t even know who the dog belongs to, talking is out. In that case,I would get myself a live catch trap and bring him to the shelter when you catch him. Animal control may even let you borrow one.
