Why does ABC News consider cold weather in the NE in December “breaking news”?

We don’t need national news.
ABC News just came on and for the first 7 minutes, they went to 2 different meteorologists in the NE discussing the cold and snow in the northeast.
Do they know it’s December? Do they realize it’s the northeast?
Do they realize this isn’t breaking news?
