I believe this to be a bunch of media driven hype.

ND is the only one of worth. They are an Independent who can do what they want.

The rest of the teams do not even qualify for a bowl birth except for Iowa Ste who lost their coach to Penn State.

Temple 5-7
K-State 6-6 actually bowl eligible but who cares.
Baylor 5-7
Rutgers 5-7
Kansas 5-7
UCF 5-7
Auburn 5-7 Could use the practice
FL St 5-7 Could use the practice

Hardly the end of Bowls even if there are too many bowl gmes.

Yea, I don't think they should even let 5-7 teams play in bowls. Teams without a coach get a pass. Notre Dame are just being pussies. Never thought I'd see the day where they take the coward's way out.

Maybe all but ND, the teams/players don’t feel they deserve to play in bowl game with losing record, just my opinion

This is the future. The question will no longer be which players opt out of bowls, but which teams opt out. If a university does not make the playoff, the season is considered a loss, and the bowls become irrelevant. Maybe we need to expand the playoff to 16 teams, and let the chips fall where they may.

I suspect every one of those bowls is a net cost to invited teams, and I doubt the programs listed have a budgetary surplus in their athletic department to absorb that easily. Probably made financial sense to decline. Maybe the result will end up being the paring down of the number of bowl games.

ND chose not to play in bowls games for nearly 50 years (1925-1970)

This is the price of ESPN creating all those BS bowls about 15 years ago. There were already too many and now the playoffs have gobbled up some bowl eligible teams in the first round. And teams with losing records don’t want to go in the hole to travel to bum frick, Idaho to play another school who is .500 or worse.

It is a sad day now that we have teams opting out of bowls. Bowl season used to add to Christmas and I LOVED it.

Losing their meaningless bowl game would validate the committee’s decision to keep them out. With Jeremiah Love injured, and it being a “meaningless” bowl game, I could see them losing.

Might be smart for them to sit this one out for their future playoff arguments. Still cowardly of them though.

Man I'd love to play K-State a week after the Houston game. Feel like we owe them one!

Practice or not.

I thought you had to NOT have a losing record to get a bowl game. Is there really that many games now?

The practice is worthless now. Your entire roster pretty much changes anyway

I wish every single team would decline their bowl invite

Back in the 90s, you had about 15-20 bowl games, and most of them started in the few days leading up to Christmas and it climaxed with the New Year's Day bowls. Then all of the unnecessary expansion happened. There are 36 bowl games that are NOT part of the playoffs. Add in the Cotton, Orange, Rose, and Sugar that are the CFP quarterfinals, then the Fiesta and Peach in the Semifinals, and there are 42 "Bowl" games.

This season we have two bowl games this Saturday, along with the Army Navy game, which should get a day to itself.

Troy and Jax State get the great reward of playing a bowl game in Montgomery that starts at 8 PM next Tuesday night. Both teams have nicer larger stadiums and neither are in the ghetto of Montgomery. It isn't even a fun trip for the players. Just over a week to prepare, and if it wasn't a game between two old in-state rivals, attendance would be horrible.

No. The only reason there is a need for some 5-7 teams this year is b/c Notre Dame, Iowa State, and Kansas State have all opted out.

Bowls are totally dead - they just don't know it yet. The shoe won't drop until something like #10 declines a conference championship game. Then everything is going to completely go off the rails. And I think that happens much sooner than anyone thinks. Like next year or the next.

A 5-win team going to a bowl game is pretty much in line with this new age everyone gets a participation trophy bs.

I know it feels manly and macho to toss around the coward accusation, but after this screw job, nobody should blame ND for not playing the part of the dancing monkey.

ND skipping a bowl costs ESPN TV revenue. Thats the only thing ND can do.
