Bye bye to this button?

Trump only rolled back the changes Biden put in place, according to this tweet

quote:

Did Obama expand CAFE standards?

Yes. The Obama administration enacted the largest CAFE expansion since the program began.

- What Obama did

2010 / 2012 “National Program” for Fuel Economy & Greenhouse Gases

Coordinated NHTSA’s CAFE rules with EPA’s CO2 standards.

Required steady annual increases in fuel economy through 2025.

Targeted roughly 54.5 mpg (regulatory estimate), though real-world mpg would be significantly lower because of test-cycle differences.

- Why it mattered

First major tightening since the 1970s–80s.

Brought the passenger car and light-truck fleets onto a long-term upward trajectory.

Incentivized technologies such as turbo downsizing, hybrids, light-weighting, and start-stop systems.

quote:

- Did Biden expand CAFE standards?

Yes. The Biden administration strengthened standards after the Trump administration rolled them back.

- What Biden did

2021–2022 rulemakings:

Restored and increased annual CAFE requirements.

Required roughly 8% increases per year for Model Years 2024–2026.

EPA separately issued aggressive greenhouse-gas rules for MY 2027–2032, which—although not technically CAFE—strongly influence automaker fleet planning.

- Proposed/ongoing changes (as of 2024–2025 policy environment)

NHTSA proposed further CAFE increases for 2027–2032, though finalization depends heavily on political changes.

EPA rules encourage EV adoption, indirectly raising fleet averages.

Looks like we need to roll back all the way to Obama's changes to get rid of start-stop bullshite.

Only one of our vehicles has it, thankfully. The other two are a diesel and a Prius, so they don't have it.

If it gets eliminated, what do you think that would do to resale values on vehicles with it?

They have delete kits/instructions to eliminate them.

I just bought a 2025 Lexus SUV. It doesn’t have this nonsense.

Yeah I just never did it on our one vehicle with it. We only drive it occasionally so I forget about it until I get in it.

I don't think mine has that option. Is that a newer option? Mine is a 2021. I need to research.

I genuinely don't know. I thought it was "optional."
Definitely slight hit to value for those that aren't optional.

Are they doing anything to limit CARBs ability to make their own rules? Without that we won’t see anything meaningful.

All they had to do was put it in the settings. Most people would not have bothered to go find it and those of us who hate it could just shut it off permanently.

They would have gotten at least some of the benefits that they believe the auto-shut off provides. Instead, they just pissed off a bunch of people who are now moving for it to be killed completely.

When environmentalist types implement something, I swear they try to do it in both the most ineffective and obnoxious way possible.

Just cut your seatbelt and put the clip in the hole. Solved.

Best aftermarket part ever. Was like $25 and now it defaults to "off" on startup. It was so goddamn annoying to have to remember to hit that button every single time I got in, before installing this. Imagine wearing out a starter to save half an ounce of gas over the course of 5 years.

I applaud this effort and implore EPA/Trump to remove all the ridiculous refrigerant restrictions in HVAC. The price of a 4 ton HVAC unit with condenser has more than doubled over the last 3-5 years. One asinine fact is the new refrigerant required by EPA is flammable. It’s criminal what these idiots have to “affordability” and common sense in the market place all over the fear of fake climate change.

I had a truck for work that was supposed to have it but it never worked. It was like the off button was always pressed. They told me to bring it in to the dealer to get fixed, that never happened.

These can be turned off. Just Google or YouTube for your vehicle. I turn them off on my vehicles.

None of our vehicles have this but dammit, Everytime I rent a car with this feature I get irrationally angry.

This can’t be true emphasized enough.

So many things in our lives have been complicated, made less reliable and far more expensive by bureaucratic tyrants with god complexes thinking they know better than everyone around them.

I’ve had it on a BMW and a Lincoln and had to manually turn it off every time I started the car in both of them. Maybe GMC, Mercedes, etc… have a setting where it stays off but I haven’t experienced that.
