... or some other big name in playoffs or NFL. Nothing else makes sense unless they are trying to self-destruct. Madness.

This kind of kills this theory. They went hard after a Tongan American Mormon with virtually no experience outside of Utah and surrounding areas.
That doesn't sound like a team with an ace in the hole coaching in the playoffs

With this being so late, why would anyone want this job now? A few weeks ago, perhaps - but now? A 128th ranking in the recruiting class leaves a significant amount of ground to make up. It will certainly be interesting to see how things move forward.

Mike Tomlin is not going anywhere. He works in the most stable organization in pro sports --- 3 coaches in 56 years. He'll leave when he retires.
Diaz is a possibility, I guess. It would be an underwhelming hire.
The thing is that we know that they are not waiting on anyone. They spent 2 weeks wooing Sitake, only to have him re-up at BYU. I'm not sure they have a working plan right now.

Sitake is a highly regarded coach. That was a big swing and a swing not to be really embarrassed about. Sitake would have been an immediate culture guy.

It definitely doesn’t have to be that.
It is easy to assume that’s the case because it helps make sense of a crazy situation.
But leaving Alabama for Penn State would be a crazier situation…especially when you are heading into the playoffs.

I still can't believe they passed on Hartline.
They must only want someone with HC experience.
BK would actually be a decent fit who could bring some stability to the program. I guess Chip Kelly is also available (at least until anOSU re-hires him to take over for Hartline).

Penn state is being blackballed by Jimmy sexton, per Todd mcshay. Sexton has seemed several Penn state targets away.
