I believe Coach O was what most made the LSU job attractive for our last two hires

One for the wrong reasons, one (I think) for the right.
I believe Kelly, in his mind, truly thought, hey if that Neanderthal can win a NC there, I should be able to basically sleepwalk my way to one and ride off into the sunset as a championship coach. Of course, his mindset got him sleepwalking his way out of a job and probably to college football coaching eternal ignominy.
I think Lane, on the other hand, has a certain genuine respect for O’s abilities, while still understanding his limitations. He knows O is not a big X’s and O’s kinda coach, but saw what he was able to do catching lightning in a bottle in 2019 with the right chemistry and the right coordinators (and of course the players) and sees this as his opportunity not to just do the same, but put it all together in a more sustained fashion and actually cement himself as a dynasty creating coach. I think he also recognizes that it will require HIS OWN unique skill set and genuine effort to get there and not something that will simply fall upon him because O did it.
I think Lane has the right sort of hubris for this, while Kelly obviously had the wrong sort.

I think you're right on the money with all of this.

I doubt Kelly took the job thinking “I’ll just be lazy and sleep walk through this”.
He just didn’t realize what he was getting into, and he was in over his head.

Lane is a grinder. The only grinding BK did here was on recruits.

Maybe BK was the dumba$$ the whole time. Ole coon arse coach o figured it out quite easily. BK wouldn't have had the success he had in the beginning without Os players

Oh absolutely. Kelly saw everything as a caricature so much, he thought he had to turn himself into one.

Just wanted to drop an upvote for the word ignominy. Nice one!

Not really. He caught lightning in a bottle with Joe Burrow, and then the real Orgeron reared his ugly head in 2020 & 2021.
He imploded the program in record time.

Nah man. He built that team. Covid and blm derailed coach o. Ill admit that having side pieces didn't help

He got lucky, and he could never build a team like that again in 100 years.
2020 & 2021 Ed Orgeron are the real Ed Orgeron, just like 2005-2007 Ed Orgeron at Ole Miss.

Let’s be honest. 2019 never happens without JoeCool and rest of studs we had
It was almost like they were automatic regardless of Coach O

Exactly. Joe Brady and Dave Aranda were way more important than O as well.

yeah and coach o would have done ok if Amanda would have stayed

quote:Yeah, I think a decade at Notre Dame created some of that laziness. At South Bend, you don't have a schedule with 6+ teams that could beat you every season if you aren't on your game, not even when they started meshing with the ACC. You have 2-3 big games, then some you can coast through, then you get a bowl (playoff now) relatively fresh.
I doubt Kelly took the job thinking “I’ll just be lazy and sleep walk through this”.
He just didn’t realize what he was getting into, and he was in over his head.
I imagine he was stunned to see the intensity the opponents brought even in wins like South Carolina last year, Auburn in 2022, etc. Not to mention games like Florida and A&M last year, Vandy and Ole Miss this year (hell Ole Miss and A&M every year), Tennessee a couple years back and so on. I bet he thought he'd have to deal with Bama, then whoever in Atlanta, and would scrimmage through the rest.
At the very least, Kiffin isn't operating under that assumption. He knows the SEC quite well, knows it is a grinder.

Ed O has been a part of 5 national championships off the top of my head. Could be wrong.
He’s better than a lot of people think.

True. But, who discovered brady?

Orgeron walked into a championship program with OC, DC and S&C coach in place and a team loaded with talent. It doesn’t get any easier than that. He could never build a program or even maintain one for a long period. In fact he couldn’t have even done what Kelly did in 2022.

You can say it all in a couple of sentences. LSU doesn’t need hall of fame coaches (ex. like Alabama, Florida, etc.) to win championships.
