Really headscratcher there. Did they not have booster committments for the buyout originally?

This is my guess.

But who are they gonna hire now?

Looks like they will try and get stein or Hartline.

If I'm them I take stein. Could also try and pull eric Morris from okie state.

They had to get Stoops to restructure his buyout so it probably took his undeniable failure to kick that into gear.

Probably took a bit to see if they can afford his buyout. I didn’t realize sumrall is a Kentucky grad. Wonder if he would have gone there.

He's taken that program down a notch the past few years for sure.

The world we live in. Firing the day after season is over puts you at a disadvantage.

FYI, there’s nothing that can be done from a calendar standpoint that would change it. That’s a false solution.

UK AD Barnhart posted an announcement after Stoops was fired saying he wants a coach with proven results so not sure if that disqualifies Stein or not.

That is one fricking insane buyout for a UK football coach. $38 million. Holy damn

Our AD had hoped we’d win one of the last 2 games or atleast be competitive and he wouldn’t need to make a change. We lost by a combined score of 82-17. The pressure from fans and apparently the BOT made him make a change otherwise he wouldn’t have.

He’s supposedly going to announce his retirement next year and didn’t want to deal with a coaching search.

Because their AD is coasting on a god complex built over a 24 year tenure. He's never shown accountability for the mistakes made over the last decade. Cals lifetime contract, getting taken advantage of by stoops and his agent when texas AM was supposedly sniffing around.

He should have retired after cal bailed him out by going to Arkansas. Too much pride to retire so he will probably ruin this hire as well, but hey his names on the soccer, baseball, and softball complex.

Truth be told this is a systemic problem at UK. Not enough big donors, not a big recruiting base, second best program in the state, reliance on conventional methods, etc. Stoops has been a dead man walking for the last couple years and to wait until now to fire him was a dereliction of duty. Sumrall is a UK alum who they could've gotten last year with certainty. Even two weeks ago they had a chance. Now they're delusional thinking they'll poach a young OC from oregon or ohio state when they'll settle for dan mullen

Mitch Bernhardt was Mark Emmett’s choice to replace Joe Dean at LSU when Joe Dean was forced out.

His tenure has been mixed at best; would think UK would make a move to replace Mitch and let new blood make the hire.

The Stoops contract had to be the worst in CFB history. Even worse than Jimbo, Riley, and BK who had all at least had success at some point.

Barnhart hired a drunk to coach a blue blood basketball program then let him coach for 2 years without a contract, just under an MOU without a morals clause.

OKST is a better job, and despite the tired refrain of "T. Boone Pickens is dead", we have plenty of donors who are on board. They were just tired of Gundy, and Gundy refused to play the NIL game.
