Seems Desantis and senate politicians are against the plan, but do Floridians even care?

Trump faces rare rift with Florida Republicans over offshore drilling plan
Florida Republicans are fuming as the Trump administration proposes to open up new drilling in the Eastern Gulf of Mexico.
“The new maps released today by @SecretaryBurgum and @Interior outlining potential new offshore oil drilling sites in the Gulf of America are HIGHLY concerning—and we will be engaging directly with the department on this issue,” wrote Sen. Ashley Moody (R-Fla.) in a post on the social platform X.
The office of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) also criticized the plan, noting that in 2020, President Trump blocked drilling off the state’s coasts.
“Our Administration supports the 2020 Presidential Memorandum and urges the Department of Interior to reconsider and to conform to the 2020 Trump Administration policy,” Molly Best, a spokesperson for DeSantis, said in a statement to The Hill.
On Thursday, the Trump administration proposed a massive expansion of U.S. offshore drilling, which would include opening up new drilling in the eastern gulf, as well as in California.
California is reliably blue but has a few swing districts where the issue could be a big one. Florida, by contrast, has gone from a swing state to reliably red, so the drilling issue is a rare break for some of its members with the president.
The oil industry has argued that drilling even in controversial places such as the eastern gulf is necessary for the long run.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s “updated reserve estimate of 7.04 billion barrels of oil equivalent shows the Central and Western areas will remain prolific for decades, but sustaining the Gulf’s long-term competitiveness means evaluating opportunities in the Gulf of America Program Area B as well,” Erik Milito, president of the National Ocean Industries Association, said in a statement to The Hill, referring to all of the drilling areas proposed by the Trump administration.

I know a few Florida people and they care. The BP Horizon disaster didn't help.

From what I see, the leases are so far offshore you won't notice even if you go out there to fish.

It's from NIMBY types and businesses who think it will hurt tourism

Well if they can see over the horizon by 20 to 80 miles. Can likely base work boats in Mobil, Alabama or the worst port in Florida. Floridians will see little oil and gas activity. And Florida is way unproven and the geology is very different than offshore Louisiana and Texas. It could be dry hole city out there.

States that refuse to drill should pay more

Goign to be a big problem with most people. Have family in Venice (south of Sarasota) and visit there several times a year. They are fanatical about all kinds of shite when it comes to the environment and any real/perceived threat.
Not going to go over well. I am in oil & gas.

Any rig out there would be so far offshore, you are going to need a bigger boat just to reach the platform.
Also most newer platforms are not set in place anymore. The huge thousand foot jackets have been replaced with floating rigs in deep water. So any impact to wildlife would be minimized and would not create a reef like abandoned platforms in the western and central gulf. They might even try to keep you way from the platform as it is constantly moving.
As far as visibility, only shallower drilling would be concerning, which would use jack up rigs. In fact Cuba is using jack up rigs near the Keys in international or territorial waters and is causing a fuss.
But Trump is not proposing any thing this close at this time.
Maybe Tampa can steal Fourchon’s title as the Gateway to America’s Energy.

But is it? People don't want nuclear power over the same "fear"

Agree.

Didn't someone ban drilling (extend the moratorium) from Florida's gulf coast all the way around and up to south carolina during their last term? That's some john kerry level of flip-flopping... and y'all gobble it up.

Slide in a submersible and drill 70 miles offshore. Slide the submersible in from Louisiana. They will never see it. If there is oil the deal with it at the time.
A good PR campaign will be necessary to deal with typical American hysteria. We are too hysterical as a people.

That’s the complexity with this issue.
People don’t want to see them but a lot of sport and commercial fishermen would love having more spots to hit offshore.

They won't see them any more than the Norwegians see them. It's too far offshore.

Deepwater Horizon doesn't help the perception of offshore drilling. Tourism is a obviously a huge driver in the state economy and Deepwater Horizon had a negative impact - heck, I think they are still handing out $$ from that.
Also, Eglin AFB and Tyndall AFB in the panhandle use most of the GOM to the south and east as part of their test ranges.
Oil rigs could impact testing. To what extent, I don't know.

Banned 1/3 of the Gulf of America for decades. Oil was already discovered off Pensacola and the lease had to be turned back in due the Fed ban.

China is already drilling close to South Florida. Probably closer than we will in the Gulf.
