Odds of this happening? Why is Lane not flirting with going back to the NFL?

money?
His pay scale is probably the average NFL hc salary, which is around 7 million. No GM is going to pay him 10M.

His salary will probably be triple at the college level

The $14m LSU is reportedly offering would make him the 8th highest paid NFL coach (what Kyle Shanahan makes). Everyone above that has at least one Super Bowl. He isn’t fetching anywhere near that

The NFL's also a lot harder and it's more likely he would be fired from an NFL team within 5 years than LSU. If he can succeed at Ole Miss in this new era he's a damn near lock to at least get to 1 extension in Baton Rouge. More money with more stability is a no-brainer financial decision

Also, a college HC makes all the decisions. If he wants a player on another team / in the portal, he tells his GM to go get them. There is no power struggle, he has all the control (and if he wants his current employer to give him more, Jimmy Sexton will happily field his call). That's not the way it works in an NFL franchise with segmented power

(A reminder that his GM in Oakland was skeletor Al Davis. Can’t speak for Lane, but I can't imagine ever wanting to coach in the NFL again after that)

I still think it’s a funny picture ;).

I can’t tell you if there’s mutual NFL interest or not, but if Lane were making that jump, he wouldn’t need to make an announcement following the Egg Bowl or leave his team prior to a playoff run.

In the NFL it doesn’t matter how good of a coach you are. You are married to your QB. You have no control over who your qb will be. Tons of great coaches get fired because their team just never gets them a franchise qb. Also I think Kiffin is so good in college because he is so great schematically. I think that advantage lessons in the nfl because all the players are so good you don’t have as many busts or players you can scheme to pick on.

But he would have a QB in Dart he is extremely knowledgeable about. And don’t the Mara’s have plenty of money? Trust me, I want Lane so long as he has a 4th down game management guy to help him not be really dumb as I’ve seen, but just saying isn’t this a possibility? I’m ignorant to NFL timing vs college, I’ll admit, but if he can continue to coach and go back to the NFL where he failed quite possibly because of Al Davis meddling, wouldn’t it be a possibility? You guys tell me.

Not really. It’s pretty stupid, like 99% of these AI generated pictures.

Depends on what you mean by "harder." If you are just a Head Coach in the NFL you don't deal with Free Agency, rosters, or contracts. You have a GM. If a Head Coach wants a player but a GM wants a different one the GM wins. And then if there is also an Owner who inserts himself and likes a specific player of those two then the Owner wins.

Sure the game is quicker in letting coaches go but if all you want to do is Coach then its an easier job. Its why Kyle Shannahan never wanted to Coach at Texas despite many opportunities to. NFL was easier. Same with Joe Brady and countless others.

So again depends on what you mean "harder."

It's not just money, it's control.

Most NFL coaches can still be fired by the GM, only a couple are truly the man in charge of it all. It's more of a partnership there.

In college, the coach is the man.

Maybe he does want the NFL again, but right now, his path back to NFL is probably as OC.

Why would he take the step down in pay, prestige, and control at this point? Recently fired chip Kelly was highest paid OC ($6m) and gets fired after week 12 in his first season.

Prove it at the highest level of the SEC (sorry thats not OM) and then NFL HC is a real possibility where he'll get a minimum 4 year runway.

Why would he take less money?

Why would an NFL team bank on a guy willing to leave during a playoff run?
