Why was early signing day necessary?

and if it is so necessary, why couldn't it be in the beginning of January?
If we are trying to appease early enrollees, doing it in early January still gives the kids plenty of time to enroll for the spring semester.
I feel bad for Lane...he wants to stay and finish the entire season but he can't because of the recruiting calendar.

There's so may calander based adjustments that need to be made to run this like the revenue based business it ultimately is now.

Get rid of the conference championship games, expand the playoffs to 16, and make it Championship December culminating with the championship game on January 1. Make New Year's Day great again. Start high school signing and the transfer portal about a week later.

If I were the NCAA dictator:
No ESD
No early enrollment
-Any team that fires a coach during the regular season will miss postseason play
-In addition to the January portal, if a coach is fired, quits, or is hired, any player on any effected roster is allowed to transfer within 1 week of the event, and that includes unrelated teams. Example: if LSU's starting Mike transfers to a team that doesn't have a coaching change, that teams former starting Mike can portal

This CBS article, written in 2017 when the early signing period was created, does not provide any compelling reasons for the early signing period:

Who benefits from the new rule?
One goal of the new rule is to prevent prospects from being dropped just days before the February signing day due to either new coaching staffs or simply being recruited over with programs going after more- or differently-talented players. The Early Signing Period allows kids to lock up their spot. It also allows coaches to be more productive in January so they do not have to waste time babysitting solid commitments. For the kid who wants to end the recruiting process and not deal with the stresses of coaching visits and pressures from external forces, this is for him, too.

Who does the new rule hurt?
Nick Saban, for one. Programs like Alabama at the top of the food chain usually reevaluate their board as February approaches, get a good sense on where they are going to come up short and then go out and poach other top prospects -- knowing that they can flip a pretty healthy portion of the United States. This is obviously a nice advantage that those programs no longer enjoy. Now much of the inventory that Saban and Co. would search to find those flips is heavily depleted.
This also creates some pain for programs that recently made new coaching hires as they, historically, often leaned on January to make up major ground with prospects. Good luck with that this year Willie Taggart (who inherited a Florida State team currently ranked 50th in recruiting) or Jeremy Pruitt (who saw Tennessee sink to as low as 48th before starting to claw back up). Even Dan Mullen at Florida (down to 32nd and now trying to make a move) will be impacted.

The best scenario is to just allow signers to sign whenever they are ready, or open a signing period on a certain day. Instead of just doing a fall portal, just do a portal signing period before summer, or spring. You can enter after the fall, but you can't sign until the signing period opens.

This makes way too much sense, so unfortunately it'll never happen.

You need time to admit kids, move kids, enroll kids, etc. to start the Spring semester. I don't think removing the conference championship is the answer bc that's a prideful thing. The answer isn't what is happening now, but Coaches leaving is absolutely apart of the problem.

They should move it back to February like it used to be and make the portal in February as well imo

My take has been to get rid of early enrollment all together. Kids need to finish HS like the rest of their classmates. Having a 16 year old kid on a roster with 25 year old young man is not good.

One intention was to get HS players in ahead of transfers. This was true even before the portal got rolling
