I don't remember a time when I was younger when Mayors felt they yielded so much power.
Has it always been like this or this strictly TDS?
The Boston Mayor, Chicago Mayor, now Mandami in NYC

Read the novel The Last Hurrah
In the old days mayors actually had more power, controlling handouts and projects. But FDR changed that - he made Washington Big Daddy, not City Hall

This is correct sir. It was much better in that age but still majorly corrupt. The mayor owned the town.

The powers of mayors vary widely across the country depending upon each state’s constitution. Mayors generally were MUCH stronger prior to the New Deal.
Mayors in Louisiana tend to be exceptionally weak on account of Louisiana’s constitution centralizing so much power in the governor’s office.

When it’s a democrat mayor their power is unlimited. That’s what’s called (D)ifferent

It is a pick your poison type of situation. I would rather have local politicians control more than state or the feds. That being said, you need legit judicial to keep them in check.

You saying the Mamdani effect doesn't affect me?

NYC has over 8 million people, only 12 states have more people. I reckon a city like that need to be somewhat self controlled.

Think about this, mayors in Louisiana often have absolutely ZERO authority over any of the following things in their cities:
Schools
Airports
Seaports
Hospitals
Universities
Casinos
Stadiums
Libraries
Parks
Flood control infrastructure
And extremely limited control over roads, highways, and bridges.
In most states, the bulk of that would be controlled by local authorities.

As someone already posted, NYC has a larger population than most states. It’s not uncommon for the NYC Mayor to meet with POTUS.

I think you mean WIELD.
They don’t have that much power. What makes your think Mandami has a lot of power?

Strong mayor systems are less prevalent in the South. Most of us from this part of the country grew up in towns or cities that adopted either a strong council form of government or a council-manager form of government.
