Before that was the The Job. More of a tragic-comic sitcom take than Rescue Me. Unfortunately only lasted 2 seasons, but IMO one of the best ever. S2E8 (The Barbecue) is maybe the most chaotic 30 minutes ever put on TV. "YOU DON'T MESS WITH A BLACK MAN'S SHRIMP. SHRIMP IS THE BLACK MAN'S LOBSTER!"

There was one episode that was so funny that had to do with the rumor that the Captain's really hot wife didn't wear underwear and the lengths they all went to try to confirm this.

Yes, in a comical manner, absolutely. Not a problem for 70’s prime time shows like All in the Family.
