How hard could it really be to manage a city like Baton Rouge?

The main part of it, LSU, governs itself. Then ya have chem plants and refineries, they pretty much call their own shots at this point, maybe you can squeeze some extra tax dollars out of them. Ya have corporations and small business, they focus on their own problems and pay their taxes. The town after that is essentially various suburbs that you have to provide water and trash services to. Ya got the bad part of town that causes all your problems, complains the most, and generates virtually no tax revenue. They are also the only people riding the buses. Ya have a bunch of poorly performing schools, but there is a school board that manages that. We have a bunch of libraries and nobody reads. The park system is nice, but could probably have their funds reduced. Seems pretty simple: provide water and trash pickup, have a large police force, don't pump money into things people dont use, and eventually you are going to have to start allotting funding to areas that pay more taxes. Am I missing anything?

I'd say very difficult as you're contending with multiple avenues of problems - issues with the river, issues with crime, issues with vagrancy, issues with homelessness, issues with po' people, issues with massive congestion due to population increase.

I'd imagine the casino provides a cushion for the govt. Lose that and you're out of luck.

BR is not a good city imo.

Of course it’s easy. Look how stupid the people are who are elected and they don’t have to show a profit.

Well, people are full of hate and no matter what you do they'll not be on board. They don't want change. They don't want to invest in city upgrades (roads, trash pickup, signals, maintenance ain't free).

I know Kip was losing his mind because of the short sightedness of those who fought (and won) against a loop.

exactly. You don’t manage. You mitigate.

It's incredibly hard. Unfortunately, the people who think they can run it the best can't, and the people who can actually run it well are too smart to do it.

You've figured out that Baton Rouge contains both LSU and refineries. Sounds like you've got it all figured out.

It is as easy as coaching LSU football.
By that standard, anyone on these boards could do it better than it is / has been done.

Half the people want change and do understand the need for upgrades and maintenance. The problem is that no matter how much money we pay in taxes, the problems are never addressed. This is because government wastes the money that it doesn’t outright steal.

Go by your local DMV and tell me how efficient they are. Most government employees do about as much as they do. Why on earth would I want to invest in that?

Pick any big project the city has ordered work for and take a look at the cost overruns and mismanagement. The amount of corruption in plain sight is mind boggling. I’m supposed to invest in that?

The other half of the population could care less about the problems but they’ll dang sure vote yes on any new taxes to fix the problems since they won’t be the ones paying for it.

See the problem here?
