IIRC, Rich Rodriguez’s name was pretty heavy in the mix.

I think Saban would have jumped. The Bama weirdness was fresh and he missed his LSU setup.

I know that Saban reached back out to Skip about coming back, but never got the full story. Can anyone fill me in?

I don’t think that’s true
Probably Fisher. The coach in waiting tag means nothing. Maybe got Bo Pelini to hold off on accepting the Nebraska job too

Yea it no doubt would've been Saban.

Timing would’ve been off by a year.
Saban left the Dolphins at the end of 2006. Les had just completed an 11-2 season with a Sugar Bowl victory over ND, and a final #3 ranking. Skip wasn’t letting Les go.
By the time the Miles to Michigan smoke started, Nick was already at Bama.

After 2 seasons in Miami, Saban realized the NFL was not for him. He did reach out to Skip about a possible return. Skip said there was no way he could get rid of the coach that replaced Saban after two consecutive 10-win seasons.

Wow, one of the first comment in that old thread: Brian Kelly would be pretty awesome. He's a winner.

Was just about to post that. BK in his 40's in a different era maybe would've worked better.

It was after the 2006 season. Saban reached back out to Skip or some boosters before he took the Alabama job. Miles was wrapping up his second year and had a solid record. They weren't going to fire Miles to bring Saban back. Seems silly now, but Saban wasn't the GOAT (yet) back then. The following year is when Miles was going to Michigan. shite on anyone you want, but it was absolutely happening until the news broke. Miles didn't want to leave the team while in a title hunt. Had the news not broken and LSU been eliminated from the BCS at that time, he would have gone to Michigan. I don't know if Saban would have left Bama after 1 year. shite. They may have pushed him to us after 2007 (ULM anyone?).
