Kiffin’s contract was automatically extended by one year through 2031, following the Rebels’ victory over the Oklahoma Sooners on Oct. 25, for their seventh win of the season. His contract will be worth up to $9 million annually, with $7.2 million guaranteed.

They can't force him to sign a new one. They can't afford to fire him and owe him a $36.6 M buyout for refusing a new extension. Kiffin can wait and listen to all offers both college and NFL. Kiffin is in the catbird seat.

So, someone hiring him would have to buy Ole Miss out or Lane would owe Ole Miss?

Seriously, what would y'all do about it if he simply says I am not talking to anybody nor signing anything right now?

Ultimatum is just words

For the people in the back, the state of Mississippi doesn't allow longer than 4 year contracts for state employees so the extension is just semantics. It was an "auto" extension that was contemplated in original contract negotiations.

his buyout if he leaves voluntarily is somewhere around $4 million.

Supposedly a big hang up between him signing his extension with us is we are bumping that buyout amount up to $15 million. Which makes sense given the amount of money we are already giving him. That gives us some assurance he won’t just up and leave easily.

This should worry Ole Miss fans. $15 million isn’t an outrageous buyout number.

Technically Lane would have to pay that amount to Ole Miss, but generally contracts with the new school involve them paying the buyout the coach owes to the old school.

The extension is for 1-year and renews every year when he gets his 8th win of the season.

Even if the extension hadn't gone through, Lane would still be the head coach of Ole Miss with several years remaining on his contract, so I am not sure what the point of the OP is.

I think it’s safe to say that any new contract lane would sign would offset any amounts owed under his current extension with Ole Miss. There are rumors out there that he is going to be paid 15 million a year with 90 million guaranteed and it could be more.

Character means a lot.

I know of a lot of people who would sell their souls to get Kiffin here. And if we somehow land him, that may just be what they’re doing.

I mean, we’re talking about a coach who would bolt on his current team in the midst of a playoff run for the next shiny object. Do you REALLY want that?

He would sign a $100 million plus deal somewhere else that negates the buyout so the buyout is irrelevant

You have to have a playoff run first before worrying about the latter. LSU is trying to get to step 1

Fair enough.

But don’t be shocked when he does the same thing to us 4 years down the line. It’s like marrying the woman who cheated on her husband with you. Odds are, she’ll cheat on you too.

I've never read Kiffin's contract, but thevwaybI understand his automatic extension is that it doesn't kick in until Jan.1. He earned it with his seventh victory, but its not effective until Jan. 1, and either party can cancel the extension with notice.

Not really relevant, anyway. His buyout remains the same, and they need a whole new contract in order to give him a raise.
