The politicians acted like the St George thing wasn't going to affect BR that much. But now, the dominos started falling, and the only option is to eliminate a third of city government positions. Now I'm all about firing excess government employees, but for that to be a option this early in the game shows how bad things really are. This means we have no money to run the city. And the only option after reducing overhead, is raising taxes. Are we going to be paying record high taxes for a small crime ridden city? And if taxes go up, more respectable people will leave. And let's not beat around the bush. North BR is a drain on the city and needs to be addressed. The logical solution is to make that its own city and bring back the tax paying families that were sick of the crime, private school, and paying taxes for themselves and 10 other families up north.

They claimed that it was going to be a financial drain on St. George, which was total horse shite. Turns out they were overly reliant on tax dollars outside of the Baton Rouge city limits.

Meh. St. George is taking over more and more city services within their limits, so there will be a need for fewer EBR employees since they won't be handling that area for some things.

The sky ain’t falling man. The city-parish government just has to hold itself accountable and can’t throw taxpayer money to solve its own poor management.

The bloat had to go at some point.

Has BR given St. George back the stolen money yet?

They had to say that. Saying anything else would be admitting they have been using St. George money and not spending it on St. George, which the whole reason St. George now exists.
Think about this. nearly 90,000 residents in St. George, all paying for EBR schools (which is the highest percent portion of your property tax), and there's only 1 public high school in St. George. Now that's not changing......yet, but when it does, BR is going to be in even more trouble when they lose that cash cow.

Well, you can't raise taxes if the people vote no, and i seriously doubt anyone anywhere is voting yes to raise taxes.

By "we" you mean the city of BR right? We aren't raising taxes in Central, Zachary, or St. George to help you out.

Every position he's eliminating should have been eliminated 25 years ago.

It seems to me that having a consolidated city/parish government was always about the city domineering over the parish. With other cities forming like Central and St George the truth is being revealed.

Since moving to Baton Rouge 25 years ago, I've always lived in the city.

Well, when you carve out one of the better parts of an already declining city, it sure ain't going to help - turns the state's capital into kinda of a shithole to undoubtedly one - for some that's a so what or good!! - for me it's not.

And in 20 years St. George IMHO, St. George is going to be what B.R. is now - watch what I'm saying.

Wrong. St George was never part of the city of BR. There was no “together”. All a lie and manipulation.

Katrina didn't start the decline, it just accelerated it. Consider the number of Katrina trash that Houston absorbed, but the state and the city (even with Dora the explorer in charge) are not nearly as dysfunctional as LA and BR have been, and continue to be.

St. George has nothing to do with it. The issue is that the mayor tried to backdoor a slush fund by stealing from the library and old people. The voters didn't fall for it, now those groups are facing cuts.

Scotlandville tried to incorporate in the 70s. BR blocked it and annexed the area instead. I agree it is is time to bus up the consolidated government and let areas like Scotlandville self-govern.

They should give north Baton Rouge a catchy name and let them split off

Maybe St. Alton

We could have parts of the city named for George Floyd and Alton sterling
