Had a friend take an 800 yard shot on a mule deer this weekend. He hit it in the hind quarter and was not able to track the deer for an ethical shot. Seems like long shots are prevalent out West but I don’t find them to be ethical. Regardless of one’s skill level, I don’t think an 800 yard shot is reasonable for anyone.

Total disregard for animal life.

I love to hunt. But it’s important to keep a respect for what life you take.

An 800yrd shot ain’t respecting that life.

I think the result of his shot speaks for itself. 800 yards is hard to justify. I don’t care if you’re out west or on the moon.

It takes A LOT of equipment and skill to make that shot on a live animal, especially out west with the crazy winds.

It can be fine in a narrow set of circumstances, including a competent shooter.

A lot of people go out and buy a piece of equipment and think it makes them a long range shooter when in reality, its a small part of the equation. 800 yards is a damned long shot on a live animal in any conditions.

Yep. That’s why he thought he could take the shot.

Typical hunting rounds like 308, 6.5, etc, typically do not retain enough energy for an ethical shot at that distance.
Need a big gun w lots of oomph.
That being said, right gun, right conditions and practice actually shooting those kind of ranges, I don’t have a problem if someone is competent. Most people never shoot past 2 or 300 yards, much less 700 or 800

I think you are wrong to lump everyone into the same category as your friend. There are a LOT of people that practice for shots like that and can make them.

800 yards is a LONG shot, you have to allow for elevation, wind, and out west most times thermals along other factors that MUST be practiced. I have a group I shoot with and we routinely shoot 1000-1500 yards to practice. Many in our group could make that shot many won't try it as too much can go wrong.

800 yard shots just because a certain caliber can do it are totally unethical and 800 yard shots on a game animal by someone that hasn't ever practiced the shot before are also very unethical.

How’d you figure he hit it in the hind quarter? Did you find it on accident without being able to track it? Seems like if you waited for the coyotes or vultures to find it, they’d have eaten the arse end off and you wouldn’t have found the entry and exit.
