BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Officials confirmed former Louisiana House Speaker Clay Schexnayder turned himself in days after being indicted by a Baton Rouge grand jury on charges of felony theft of a “rare state artifact” and malfeasance in office.
According to the Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill’s Office, Schexnayder, 56, of Gonzales, surrendered on Monday, Nov. 17, to special agents in the parking lot of the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison.
He’s facing charges of felony theft greater than $25,000 and malfeasance in office.

Nothing. He was indicted last week; today he was officially arrested and booked into jail.

A cypress board the state is claiming is worth more than $25K

I think he did steal it. Or wasn’t supposed to have it to begin with.
It was missing and the grandson of the guy that gifted it to the state spotted it on the wall in his office on a video.
Clay claims he left the board and computer at his office for the state to pick up.

That's the gist of it. He should never have taken it to begin with. Even if, as he claims, he left it on his desk for someone to pick up, he still stole it to begin with. He should never have had it in his home office. In the end, he’s responsible for it.

Started off as a donkey then turned to elephant.

A 20' x 6' cypress board that's supposed to date back to maybe the 8th century. It was harvested from around Maurpas in the early 1900s, inscribed with something then either donated or loaned to the state.
State officials can request things like that to display in their offices, but they have to remain with the state. When he left office, the board disappeared around the same time.
I'm guessing the camera system at the State Capitol or the DPS system surrounding the campus either didn't film him leaving during his last days or they don't keep the recordings for that long because a 20' x 6' board being moved around should be somewhat noticeable.

The board was at his district office in Livingston Parish

Ascension parish. Livingston parish has enough problems without having to claim that slimeball as well.

Have they checked his duck camp?

You do understand that old cypress that size is valuable? Its not a 2x4 from Lowe's.

It is a historical artifact and was displayed at the Capitol for many years. Definitely not just a piece of wood.

I value things like that different than most I suppose.
I've seen some pretty cypress for sure. Haven't seen this piece in particular, but if it's big enough I'm sure I could fashion it into a lovely counter top or mantle shelf.

This is probably the dining table at ol’ baw’s duck camp.
