And dumb. Kick the ball off 10 yards further back for a return. A kicker nailing it into the end zone shouldn’t be penalized by what essentially is the same thing as kicking it out of bounds.

It is why I hope College stays unique and never goes with this ridiculous Kickoff program.

I hate the kickoff rules. It’s taken all the excitement out of kickoff returns. And it’s made it harder to comeback bc you can’t do surprise onside kicks.

The rule never needed to be changed. Put back the old rules and make a touchback at the 20

Blah blah blah player safety and whatever else the NFL tries to say about kickoffs.

Goodell has done his damnedest to legislate out the one thing that makes football great - the violence.

They need to move a touchback to the 40 or 45. MAKE the kickers put the ball in play. Everyone wants to see a kickoff return. Makes the game more interesting, and would force special teams units to revolutionize.

The analytical data is apparently saying a touchback is the safer option... Take that option away and make the kickers / special teamers prove themselves worthy.

I say we go a step further and if you kick a touchback, the other team is rewarded with 3 points and is given the ball, 1st and Goal at the 1 yard line.

Yeah it basically kills the whole point of having a return game. You’re punishing a good kick the same way you punish a shanked one. Makes zero sense.

The intent was for the kicking team to force a return. I don’t have data, but it seems like we are seeing more returns, but not as many TDs because of the way the blockers have to be set up at the kick. No more busted lanes and no one is getting cleated anymore, which both opened up lanes.

I hate it. With kickers getting so good they only need 15 yds for a possible FG.

If CFB stayed unique, it would have kept touchbacks coming out on the 20 and not the 25. How does that really make any sense when punts into the endzone are the 20 but kickoffs are the 25.

A kicker used to be considered a lethal weapon if their kickoffs went sailing out of the endzone, preventing a Devin Hester from getting his hands on the ball. Now, they get penalized.

It's a joke. I wouldn't be surprised if they eventually scrap the whole kickoff and just start team possessions on the 20.

I feel like the real reason is that the NFL hated the criticism of PAT/FG to Commercial Break to Kickoff Touchback to Commercial Break.

Like usual, they believe they are way smarter than the fans and the perception of one play of live action (by penalizing a non-kickoff return) softens the blow of 7 minutes of commercials and one single play being run.
