Watching the President's speech in Armageddon...

And it struck me how writing like this hardly exists in mainstream summer blockbusters anymore. The same thing for Bill Pullman's speech in Independence Day. It blows my mind how cheesy action films from the 90s have become examples of how Hollywood should do it here in the 2020s.

That’s because they had talented straight WASPs handling business back then.
Say what you will about ole Handy’s Harvey, he was castle mostly untalented women but they were all attractive. Now they don’t hire any talented women and they look like the old dog poo mixed with the new dog poo.

Somewhere in the mid to late 90s a switch was flipped and people just started doing less and less. We got dumber and expected more free stuff for less work. Was it CERN? I don’t know, but change my mind.

Armageddon is a perfect blockbuster in every sense of the word.
My god that’s an enjoyable as all heck movie.
You laugh, you cry with every other emotion mixed in!
Back when Hollywood wasn’t afraid of “toxic masculinity”.
I’d love for movie like this to make a comeback.

Armageddon.
Will watch anytime it is on no matter where it is at in the movie. No shame at all.

Yea. Hollywood famously had hetero WASPs running things in its heyday.

Who cares?
Roland Emmerich is a gay German and made Stargate, Independence Day, The Patriot
Some badass American movies

Armageddon was cringy AF when it released and it hasn't gotten any better.
When I think of bad movies, it's one of the first that come to mind.
You're probably not wrong about modern day movies....but I would NOT hold up this pile of shite as an example.
Go with something like The Fugitive.

You can tell when writers stopped being family men and started being family less women and subversive fruitcakes

After the success of Top Gun, I had the highest of hopes for Twister. After watching it at home, I had never been happier that I saved the cost of 2 movie tickets. It was SO EPICALLY BAD. The original movie is a remote drop movie for me.
Don't ruin Armageddon, too

The president's speech in ID4 is easily the top speech of all time. Goosebumps. For such a silly movie its perfect.

The Fugitive was nominated for Best Picture the year it came out so that's not a fair example. I'm talking about the quality of generic summer action films from 30 years ago compared to the quality of the ones that are released today.

I agree with you in the original but I thought they did a great job with Twisters and I went in with super low expectations. To each his own I guess.

It's a Michael Bay movie. He's one of the first mainstream directors to make dating pornstars normalized.
He has no children

Michael Bay did not write Armageddon.
