LSU has a choice

We can go the governors route of hiring a cheap coach who wants the job because it’s prestigious, high profile and they don’t have a lot of options OR go with the “sure” thing which brings high salary and usually a steep buyout. These are the whales. They have options. They’re vid to the highest bidder.

I’m not opposed to going cheap. I actually like the idea but it devalues our program. It’s mid tier behavior. But it could work. Usually when it works, the coach shops around and wants more money in subsequent years. Saban was somewhat in that category but times were different. What we paid Saban at the time was in line with the top dogs of the time- bowden, spurrier and Fulmer. It was a big splash at the time because we hadn’t paid anyone close to that beforehand. We announced to the world that we were going big.

We know now that Saban was worth it of course but we paid him considerably more at the end of his run here and he eventually left. So in a way he was an up and comer and we were a stepping stone for him.

I don’t see us as a stepping stone anymore. We have shown our willing ness and ability to pay big numbers for our coaches.

Kelly has shown us that this doesn’t always work out. So maybe we switch course and revert to a more frugal model.

So if you were making the decision- which route would you take?

I don't think the so-called sure things are any surer than the others.

There's a list of candidates I like and would vet. On that list is at least one proven P4 coach, at least one G5 head coach, at least one coordinator, and at least one NFL guy. This tells me that "sure thing" vs not sure thing is not how I would evaluate this.

no such thing as a sure thing except for saban, and even he has age/desire working against him. i vote going the young, hungry route.

Obviously there’s no such thing as a sure thing.

For the sake of discussion, “Sure” thing would entail a buyout and dealing with big agent like Sexton or Armstrong

Nothing is a sure thing as far as coaching hires go.

Might be the first person to say LSU was a stepping stone for Saban. Woof that is an interesting way to put it....I never saw it as that. But yest the landscape of College Football has changed and due to that its actually more favorable to Coach in the pros rather than College which makes it harder to find an elite Coach. Whether that be an up and coming Coach or proven one.

I would rather go cheap than spend a ridiculous amount on someone like Drink. Give me Golesh or Morris over him.

Kiffin is still no. 1 if we spend the money. I believe he is worth every penny.

What is a sure thing?

We just fired a guy who seemed about as sure as it gets but never worked here.

Cheap usually has better outcomes than “sure” things.

If you recall, we were always up against other offers when Saban was here

Not sure he would have left for another college job but he /sexton certainly entertained it

I would say so. He could easily win championships with LSU and that is worth it to me.

I think it’ll take more like $14-15 million just because of the competition between 3 teams. Whoever gets him(retains him) will make him the highest paid coach in the country. Insane the numbers that are being thrown around. It will be interesting to see if any teams slow down on these escalating salaries at all.

They’re guys that would require high annual and buyouts

Thats what’s being defined as “sure” thing for discussion purposes
