The day Valve releases a gaming focused operating system, I'm going to throw a party.

I'm curious if it's easy to upgrade
If it is you essentially have a somewhat future proof console

Isn't that what SteamOS is?

The Verge has a hands-on look:

The downside of Valve’s impressive sandwich is that the Steam Machine isn’t really upgradable beyond the SSD and — if you dig deep — the 16GB of memory, which does come on standard laptop memory sticks. But the upside is an incredibly tiny game console that can alternatively double as a full desktop PC.
Our first look at the Steam Machine, Valve’s ambitious new game console

I mean a full release, intended to be installed on non-Valve hardware

This new Steam Machine could be pretty epic.

The specs are a little on the weak side imo with performance somewhere between a Series S and a Series X/PS5. 8 GB of VRAM is going to be a problem for anything other than 1080P gaming going forward. If they can price it for around $399.00 it could still be bargain.

From what I read on Steam it mentions 60 fps and the guess is that it will cost 800+ depending on storage. Not upgrading other than storage and ram.

It isn't meant to be top of the line since those gamers will always build their own.
If they price it right, it will be a runaway success just to play the tons of older games on Steam that are dirt cheap and it will be an emulation beast.
I have almost 20TB of games from Atari up through PS3 and will definitely be getting one eventually, if the price is reasonable, I will preorder.

Yea the price will of course be the kicker. These are lower-midgrade gaming pc specs so if they can keep it under $500. they may have a winner.
