Power, Politics, and the Fall of Scott Woodward

quote:
The battle that brought down LSU Athletic Director Scott Woodward was never just about football. It was political from the start. Woodward wasn’t simply the athletic face of Louisiana’s flagship university — he was a fixture in Baton Rouge’s old political guard. A registered Democrat and protégé of James Carville, Woodward was handpicked for the LSU job in 2019 by then-Governor John Bel Edwards. His arrival symbolized the continuation of a familiar order — one where the upper ranks of LSU operated as an extension of the state’s entrenched political establishment rather than a reflection of its people.
quote:
For a time, that arrangement worked. The state’s legacy donors, Carville’s inner circle, and the Baton Rouge media elite all celebrated Woodward’s return as a “homecoming.” But the truth is, Woodward’s career has always been defined less by athletics than by politics and public relations. He’s a PR expert first — someone who understands message control, media access, and narrative management better than almost anyone in Louisiana public life.
quote:
Under Woodward’s leadership, LSU athletics reflected the cultural priorities of national media, not the values of most Louisianans. He presided over high-profile, divisive gestures of support for the Black Lives Matter movement and implemented one of the most heavy-handed COVID policies in the South: requiring proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test to enter Tiger Stadium. Fans who “preverified” their vaccine status were given wristbands granting them access to special “fast pass” entry lanes — a symbol, to many, of the bureaucratic elitism that had seeped into LSU’s culture. Meanwhile, Woodward’s calling card — his high-dollar coaching contracts — became cautionary tales in excess. He left Texas A&M with the $75 million Jimbo Fisher buyout still hanging over the program, then recreated the same problem at LSU with Brian Kelly’s $95 million deal. Now, LSU is staring down the barrel of another multi-decade financial liability for a failed hire.

The whole article is worth the read. I know the admins don't like us to post whole peices, otherwise I would have.

Woodward lining up all his media fanboys to carry his water is hilarious.
He’s given out 100s of millions in contracts that failed, he’s fired a basketball coach which cost the school millions and was a mistake, and everyone here bitches daily about the state of the gameday atmosphere and campus which is a direct cause of Woodward and his buddy Tate.
But now because the media is mocking LSU, the Tiger rant can’t handle it.

Let’s criticize Woodward about his attempts to spin this favorably for himself by spinning this favorably for Landry

The author of the article did say Woodward is a PR expert.

Of course he is, look at who he learned under. James carville has never seen a camera he can’t get in front of.
For the record - I think Landry is a moron too, but Woodward and Kelly are not victims. Let’s drop that narrative.

That's the dumbest shite I'll read today.

Not a fan but SW did not negotiate Jimbo's contract / extension at A&M. That was done by the previous AD. SW was just there at the end. Hiring & firing Kelly originated with LSU's BOS. The Board gave him a list of 3 coaches to pick from, & his salary again ,originated with the BOS. This per Gordon Mckernan on a podcast 2 days ago. But Mckernqn did list SW's political connections with the Democratic party, specifically James Carville, as a main reason for his firing. FWIW.

you have that backwards.
the Extension and raise were given to Jimbo after Woodward already left.
Fisher walked away with buyout that was worth more money than the entirety of the contract Woody signed him to.

He made 2 good moves in sports that get the least attention - WBB and Baseball
He made 3 bad moves in biggest sport, but you can easily put a 4x multiplier on each bad move for football.
2-9 is his record as an AD

And he had to be coaxed into the baseball hire after failing to hire O’Sullivan from UF.
Mulkey was a good hire, but like you said, WBB doesn’t pay the bills.

It’s funny because I just posted in another thread that most people don’t understand what an ADs job actually is, and think it’s just hiring coaches.
Good timing with this post.

Wait, let's blame James Carville who is probably not involved.
Wait, wait, wait, so Woodward was also JBE's fault ?

Some of it is factually wrong. Bjork, not Woodword, extended Fisher's contract and created that $75 million buyout.

Jimbo Fisher's original Texas A&M contract, signed in December 2017, was a 10-year, $75 million deal that was fully guaranteed and included no offset language. This meant he would be paid his full salary even if he left for another job or was fired, a term that was extended in a later contract but was a key part of the original agreement.
Fact or fiction? Inquiring minds want to know.

quote:sure. It was really $67.5 million when Woodward left. Still, A lot of money.
