If we had a Monopoly on the technology then our regulation of it could be effective.
But since we don't there will be multiples of AI in other countries that will escape regulation.

I still stand by my prediction that I will die of old age before what we currently call "AI" makes the leap to a true AGI. Broadly speaking, people have a grossly overestimated view of what current AI is and the kind of technological leaps that are required before it becomes actual intelligence.

I'm on Grok quite a bit. I'm not familiar with X AI's standing in the world of development, but Grok is relatively unintelligent. It's not even close to being ready to lead the world. I suppose if it were built to do one task, it would be remarkable, but right now, it's terrible at being the Jack of all Trades.

AI is just a tool that takes input from some human, so it all depends upon the source entity not the method

AI as an existential threat is very very real.
It's more real than any Nuclear threat during the height of the cold war.
That doesn't mean it's a foregone conclusion, and it hinges on a lot of assumptions about the nature of consciousness.
Our best guess is that sentience and will arise out of systems that are complex enough - the human brain has ~86 billion neurons and the next most complex brain on Earth is a chimp with ~28 billion neurons. If that's true, we simply need to keep on the current path we are on and AI will become super intelligent. After that we are merely observers of the future AI will craft.
