Penny Shortage/Elimination - Rounding Change

Stores have started to adopt policies to round up or down when giving change for cash transactions.
What is the OT's opinion of Rouses rounding up the change?

Anyone want to start a campaign to get your total to something ending with 1 or 6 to maximize an extra 4 cents in change?

Rouses Markets announced Thursday that it will begin phasing out pennies as the United States winds down production of the one-cent coin.
The grocery chain says once each store’s penny supply runs out, it will start a new rounding policy for cash transactions — one that benefits customers.
If a customer is owed 91 cents in change, Rouses will round up and return 95 cents. If the total comes to 47 cents, the customer will get 50.

This is going to mess with people's Acorn investments

Convenience stores have begun doing that.
Works for me.
Works for me.

As long as they're rounding up when giving change and rounding down when it's time for me to pay, I wouldn't mind it.

I work int he banking world, and we are adopting similar in our software.
the fricked up thing, is of all the Fed areas that ship and accept money from FI's, only 2 will accept pennies returned, and that will not be for much longer. once they refuse to take them, there is no real clear cut idea on what to do with them at that point - guidance from the Fed has not been clear.

What happens to penny stocks? Do they become nickel stocks?

Round up every transaction to the nearest nickel, all round ups go to the national dept. if your a store that does the round up thing, tough.

If all those businesses that are rounding up paid that excess into an account, would it pay off the national debt??

I can’t remember the last time I paid for something with cash. I just use my butthole pictures, I mean credit cards.

Great. Now I can finally have that surgery.

Seems pretty obvious this would only apply to cash transactions...

We didn't use pennies at the Base Exchange and Commissary when I was in the Air Force in England 87-91.
Everything was rounded up or down.
We had no problems with it.

I don’t pay with cash because I’m not trashy and respect the people behind me in line.

When the halfpenny was phased out in 1857, it was worth 18.5 cents in 2025 equivalent. It’s time to get rid of the penny.

What will all the old people do if they can’t play penny slots at the casinos?
Posted on 11/7/25 at 12:05 pm to Tarps99
isn’t this only for cash transactions? seems minimal impact on everyday life at this point
all these headlines and social media posts ignore that aspect and act as though every transaction will be rounded up and down

They can do that but I was thinking I'll round down to the nearest dollar.

Doing the same thing they’ve always done on “penny” slots… spin 2.50 to 5.00 bucks each spin.
Giving away their retirement one spin at a time.

It's about time for an Office Space reboot.
