LSU Coaching Search: Who Should Step In, What It Really Takes — and My Pick

Here’s where things stand: LSU just pulled the trigger on a ~$54 million buyout with Brian Kelly, the interim AD Verge Ausberry has publicly stated that this next hire is expected to bring LSU into the 12-team playoff every season, and the pressure cooker has been turned to high. We’re talking about a coach who can: win in the SEC West every year, manage NIL like a pro, recruit Louisiana like it’s his backyard, steer the ship in a chaotic booster/administration environment, AND develop a QB who doesn’t embarrass us. That’s the job.

What winning looks like here (and historically):

SEC experience / credibility

Consistent recruiting horsepower (especially Louisiana + portal)

QB development or the ability to bring in the staff who will

Quick hires of top assistants — you don’t want to spend year one getting your coordinator room sorted

Ability to be the face of fundraising/boosters/politics—not just Xs & Os

Top candidates & how I rank them:

1. Lane Kiffin – The “win now” guy. He’s already producing at a high level in the SEC, develops QBs, is portal-savvy. If LSU offers elite money and lets him run the show, you’re buying into that champ ceiling. But big risk: He’s comfortable where he’s at, the buyout is steep, and he might pass if he doesn’t like the architecture.

Upside: Title game, high-profile recruiting, offense flies.

Risk: Circus, cultural fit questions, if he walks you might get stuck.

2. Jon Sumrall – The “fit + attainable” guy. Builds programs, strong Louisiana presence, good recruiter, defensive mindset. Probably the best dollar-for-win value.

Upside: Sustained 10-win+ seasons, strong identity, connection to state.

Risk: Might not be the flashy brand you want for a national title campaign, needs offensive staff hire to unlock full ceiling.

3. Jeff Brohm – Scheme smart, QB friendly. But very unlikely to move (home state ties, massive buyout) so this might be more wishful than realistic.

4. Brent Key – Culture builder, trench guy. Realistic but less proven in SEC as HC.

5. Marcus Freeman – Elite traits but basically a non-starter for LSU unless ND implodes.

My recommendation (final pick):
If I had to choose one, I’d go Jon Sumrall. He hits almost every box: recruiting, Louisiana ties, staff building, affordability relative to mega-names, and he’s probably realistic about taking LSU now — which means you can lock him in, get staff assembled early, and avoid dragging year one into “startup mode.” You might give up a shot at the 2027 title, but you’re far more likely to hit the 2026 playoff and build a lasting winner rather than gamble everything on a yes from Lane Kiffin and praying he stays five years.

So my vote: Offer Sumrall the package now, move fast, build your staff and roster, and set LSU back to being the model in Louisiana + top SEC West every year.

I guess someone didn’t watch the Tulane game this week or watch the last 4 years of Billy Napier.

Sumrall has Napier written all over him.

Nice to see chatGPT is smart enough not to be influenced by one game, unlike rantards.
That Saban guy lost to ULM, what a bum.

Grok says pull out all the stops to hire LANE KIFFIN

My Opinion: Hire Lane KiffinIf I'm LSU, I pull out all stops for Lane Kiffin. He's the no-brainer: an offensive savant who's transformed Ole Miss into a top-5 team this year, with a track record of scheming explosive attacks (think 2019 LSU vibes, but sustainable). Kiffin's SEC savvy—beating LSU three of the last four meetings—proves he gets the grind, and his recruiting (top-10 classes annually) would lock down Louisiana while poaching Texas/Alabama. Fans adore his wit and swagger; he'd sell out Tiger Stadium nightly and embrace the chaos. The timing's tricky with Ole Miss in playoff contention, but LSU's urgency (and deeper pockets) could sway him—offer $12M/year, full staff control, and NIL war chest.Kiffin isn't perfect (past drama at Tennessee/USC), but in a league of bullies, he's the bully LSU needs. Sumrall's a strong Plan B for that local-hero stability, and Brady's the dream "return of the king" if he slips from NFL. Avoid retreads like Franklin—they scream mediocrity. This hire isn't just about wins; it's about reigniting the fire that made LSU a dynasty factory (Saban, Miles, Orgeron all hoisted crystals). Geaux get your guy, Tigers—Death Valley awaits its next legend.

Sumrall can be a coordinator. He’s not ready to take on the SEC as a head coach. We see what happened with Napier.

ChaptGPT is trolling us by giving us all different names. Here is what it gave me:

Factor = Verdict
Likelihood (as of now)=? Sumrall ˜ 45%
Runner-up = Kane Wommack ˜ 25%
Dark-horse splash=Joe Brady ˜ 15%
Wildcard re-entry (boosters push hard)=Lane Kiffin ˜ 10%
Field (others)=5%

If I had to put one name on the board right now — John Sumrall walks into the introductory press conference in Baton Rouge.
He’s young enough to grow with the job, tough enough to win in the SEC, and local enough to heal LSU’s identity fracture.

Two under-the-radar contenders Verge Ausberry could realistically elevate if he pivots from splash hires:

1?? Kane Wommack — “The Modern Defensive Architect”

?? Quick Bio
• Age: 37
• Current Role: Defensive Coordinator, Alabama (2025) / former Head Coach, South Alabama (2021-2024)
• Background: Indiana DC (Top-15 defense in 2020), son of long-time coach Dave Wommack (Ole Miss).
• Style: 4-2-5 aggressive fronts with pattern-matching coverages; “build defense around personality, not scheme.”

?? Coaching Philosophy
• Blueprint: Win with physicality and emotional connection — players describe his programs as “accountable but family-driven.”
• Recruiting Approach: SEC defensive linemen first; rebuild LSU’s front-seven pipeline via Louisiana and Mississippi.
• Culture Fit: Blue-collar, no-nonsense leader — mirrors Ausberry’s ethos of discipline and respect.

?? Projected Staff Tree at LSU

Role
Target
OC- Will Hall (Tulane HC) or Jake Bentley (current analyst)
Offensive balance to complement defense
DC-Patrick Toney (former Florida)
Younger mind who understands SEC tempo
Associate HC / RBs-Frank Wilson
Keeps Louisiana roots and recruit

?? Year-1 Outlook
• Identity: Top-25 defense by October, balanced offense built around play-action.
• Fan Perception: Slow-burn builder — respected internally before headline wins arrive.
• Historical Parallel: Kirby Smart to Georgia (2016).

?? 2?? G.J. Kinne — “The Young Gunslinger

?? Quick Bio
• Age: 36
• Current Role: Head Coach, Texas State (2025) / former Incarnate Word HC and UCF OC under Gus Malzahn.
• Style: High-tempo Air-Raid hybrid with RPO power concepts.
• Personality: Hyper-competitive, charismatic, media-friendly — a natural energy booster for a fanbase.

?? Coaching Philosophy
• Blueprint: Score fast and dictate chaos; demands conditioning and speed from every position.
• Recruiting Approach: Texas and Louisiana high schools first — relationship-builder who meets coaches on campuses personally.
• Culture Fit: Youth and boldness — the anti-Brian Kelly tone LSU might crave.

?? Projected Staff Tree at LSU

DC Blake Baker
Keeps LSU’s defensive credibility intact
OC
Xavier Dye (TX State WR coach) + analytics assistant
Retains Kinne’s offensive language
Recruiting Coordinator Frank Wilson
Maintains Louisiana pipeline

Metric
Estimate
Staff Salary Pool = $10 M
Portal Retention=84 %
2026 Class Impact= +6 spots nationally
“LSU Fit Score” (1-10)= 8.3

?? Year-1 Outlook
• Identity: Top-10 offense in yards per play; defense plays catch-up.
• Fan Perception: “LSU found its Josh Heupel.” Fun, explosive, risk-taking.
• Historical Parallel: Lane Kiffin at FAU (2017) — electric offense, instant buzz.

Kane Wommack vs G.J. Kinne

Trait~ Kane Wommack
Age 37
Side of Ball -Defense

For LSU, it gave me Sumrall as well with Kiffin and Drinkwitz.

Gives Drinkwitz for Auburn, Kiffin for Florida, Rule PSU and Franklin for Arkansas.

Auburn (and LSU) have both won nattys with generational talent at QB and non-great HC’s (Chizik and Ogeron) who were both fired 1-2 years later. They need to follow that model- get a competent game-manager at HC for cheap, hire really good coordinators and spend the rest of the money on the best NFL quality QB, then OL and DL

No way, No How. What does he have to do with winning in the SEC? Nothing. Leave him where he is.
