It absolutely happens a lot. There are tons of couples that never got legally married so the wife can stay home and get gov benefits bc she’s legally a “single mom”. When in fact her de facto husband works a good job.

Absolutely.

We used to work with a guy who raised 7 kids this way.

Never married.

Systemic and historical discrimination against married people.

The woman is a “single mom” with Section 8, Food Stamps, welfare, etc.

The baby daddy “lives” with his mom officially, but actually lives in the government paid for house.

His income never gets included.

Many such cases.

it's bad when women dont get married to take advantage of the system.

it's bad when couples not together do get married and take advantage of married tax breaks.

it's bad when children starve while their parents waste their tax gifts on bullshiit.

children should not suffer in a land of abundance.

I hate the parents that cause it. I also would sacrifice a few dollars if it does actually help folks.

Doing it the right way proves to be the wrong way.

This is not really egregious, as six figure household income is pretty moderate income by today’s standards and a couple of kids in daycare would take a pretty big bite out of that.

ETA: I see this has triggered the frick out of y’all! For the record, I think that anyone who lies on application to get governmental assistance should be jailed.

They legally get around it by the definition of Household Income.

If you really dig, you will find that means the Tax Return income for the mother. It does not mean every individual under the roof.

Imagine admitting to fraud with a camera right in front of you. That is a special kind of stupid.

Sure but the opposite happens often also, military guy married someone to get the extra pay. Someone marries a girl to help her legally live in the U.S. Marry someone to get them on work healthcare.

FWIW when I was working with people with disabilities 12+ years ago we had some live in government housing and they were more strict than I expected in regards to checking on who lived there, application process, etc. I knew of more than one person that got booted out of section 8 or government housing due to lying about jobs or who was living there.

ETA: also very common for military or others to NOT divorce to keep healthcare, pay, and benefits

Get rid of all federal entitlement payments. Not only are they blatantly unconstitutional, they're extremely destructive. Kick them down to the state level.

Being “legally married” has nothing to do with it, at least as far as food stamps go, because you can’t separate a parent from a child under the age of 22 in the same household.

They either lie that the man isn’t there “but he pays the mortgage and utilities instead of child support” or the woman claims that she and the kids live somewhere else.
