Home schooled students should have the ability to play for their zoned schools, in athletics. Their parents still pay property taxes which goes to said school, they should be able to play. This was allowed until very recently.

We do
It’s up to the principals to approve at each school

I’ve seen a few school districts that do not allow. That’s why I’m saying it should be built into state law that supersedes.

Then you remove one of the reasons to actually go to school…

I know in some of the small towns, the kids who go to schools that don’t have football can play at other schools in the parish. My coworkers kid goes to school in Hessmer but plays for Avoyelles in Moreauville.

Get 'em prepared for college ball early by only having them set foot on the HS campus for football practice?

I don’t know… seems like a qualifier should be they ATTEND the school… it’s unfair to the student athletes who probably have to take a math or English class with a demanding teacher… while the home school kid mom just giving him A’s …

Agreed. If anything, the law should prevent it, not allow it.

Dang, where was this mom when I was in home school? Mine worked me harder than just about any professor I encountered in college.

As a home schooler back before it was cool (1980s), I can sympathize with folks wanting to let them participate in high school ball. Would have been great to have that as even a possibility back then.

On one hand I get that, but then do you give the parents back a cut of their property tax? They are helping to pay for the school.

Didn’t mean it as an insult… it becomes a issue of standards and fairness… said teacher could be more demanding than your mom… plus how does the school benefit from letting someone compete for playing time against someone who isn’t a student… one of the perks of attending a school is access to athletics programs… it’s like someone going to Southern but playing football for LSU

Tim wasn't zoned to play at nease, being that it's in an entirely different county than the tebow family residence... probably close to 30 miles from their family home in deep westside of Jacksonville. They rented an apartment in st johns county to get him into the public school of their choice... and that's absolutely in no way, shape, or form in the spirit of what you're asking for.

This is a ridiculous statement. If this is the case then every kid in the state should have the same exact teachers

most of them won’t play at college, many don’t even aspire to. they just want to compete at the high school level.
my son had a great high school career.
he could have played at the college level, but he had no desire.
it crushed me initially, but i get it.
a few of his teammates played college ball and it just consumes your life at that point. he just didn’t want to do it.
( then he tears his ACL this summer playing pick up basketball!!) holy moly! holy cow!

It’s about teammates going through the same experiences (and being held to the same standards) together.

Would not want to be teammates with a guy who only showed up for sports.

Homeschoolers should attend a school if they want to partake in school activities. Can’t have your cake and eat it too kind of thing IMO.

Pretty sure they do all that kind of stuff for home school kids… football teams, proms, etc

By that logic private school kids should be able to play on the public school team too?

I think a prerequisite to playing for a schools team being actually attending that school is pretty fair.

No, their portion of tax that goes towards schools should be directed to their private school. Make schools have to compete for this money.

We don't need more laws we need less. In louisiana this is allowed, they are even eligible at in zone private/select schools.
