Georgia and Oregon have done all right with Kirby and Lanning.

Completely agree. I don’t want another CEO-like coach who doesn’t connect with any players. Feel like coordinators who are now HCs are way more involved in a good way.

It’s not like it never ever works out. All you can do is play the odds.

I rather a HC that controls one side of the ball.

Since 2020, the ability to hire 2 good coordinatiors on both sides of the ball has killed us

He had been the HC at both Washington and USC prior to that. He had plenty of experience running a program.

And while I agree that Day, Lanning, and Kirby all have worked out extremely well, they weren’t just any ol’ coordinators. They all came from the staffs of some of the best coaches and program builders in the history of college football. Kirby from Saban’s, Day from Urban’s, and Lanning from Kirby’s himself.

And they didn’t go to any old programs. Ohio State, Georgia, and Oregon are all top 5 programs and were all 3 in great shape when they took over for Urban, Cristobal, and Richt.

Fair point.

Can you name a couple of coordinators that are similar to those 2 when they were hired?

Sark was a HC prior to Texas. He spent some time in the Nick Saban Coaches Rehab Unit though.

Also, I think Day is a really good coach. But he was almost run out of town as recently as after last season’s loss to Michigan. Those folks were stupid, but that’s how it goes. Everybody thinks he’s great now—and he probably is. Doesn’t hurt that after giving up calling plays, the past 2 years he’s had Chip Kelly and Brian Hartline. And had Jim Knowles as DC for a few years before Matt Patricia this year. And they’ve spent ridiculous NIL money.

In the new era, it’s hard to really judge coaches due to all the outside factors that they have very little control over. If a program is pouring a ton of resources into itself, different types of coaches can likely be successful.

But in fairness he may not remember much of this

Nick Saban, Jimbo Fisher and Pat Narduzzi are others who came to head coaching roles from coordinator ranks.

Need a culture builder. I don’t care if it’s a coordinator or head coach.

Sark was a head coach at Washington and USC. He was not a first-time head coach/OC hire for Texas any more than Kiffin was for FAU.

A lot of LSU are elitists and think they can wave a manic wand and NS,CUM,DAN L,KIRBY,KIFFEN will all come running here.BS it has never worked that way.NS ,LM, were not big names ,so get used to them hiring and up and comer like GEO,ORE,NDETC.did and they have done quite well.

I never thought any of those guys except Kiffin would. Kiffin absolutely would. I don't know about now with the madness, but he definitely would normally have.
