I’ve said this during every job search we’ve gone through that I can remember, starting with Curly. And with all the parity of the new era where schools like Indiana, Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, etc…are all dumping crazy resources into their programs, it’s going to be even harder to poach a coach. From anywhere, much less anywhere we want. Not to say it can’t be done. But we’re either going to not get the guy most want or we’re going to have to commit to another crazy contract.

I’ve always said there are 3 things that people greatly underestimate when it comes to coaching hires.

1) Timing. And this may be the biggest one. Lane would have crawled over broken glass to take this job in 2021. In 2025, maybe not. His kids are older. One goes to Ole Miss, I believe. Another will be a senior in high school next year, too, I believe. He somehow talked his ex-wife into moving to Oxford so they could all be closer together. AND, he probably thinks he can win at Ole Miss now. You wanna be the 4th coach to win a NC at LSU in the past 25 years? Or the 1st one to ever do it in Ole Miss history? Not saying he won’t take the job, but timing will absolutely play a part.

2) quality of life—this is tied somewhat to timing when it comes to family and kids and school. But he’s also got his staff and their families to think about. And maybe he’s got a great circle of friends in Oxford. Maybe he goes to a church that he loves. A favorite restaurant. Hell, a therapist he may be seeing. Who knows what he truly values right now at 50 that he may not have when he was younger.

3) Job security. Not much at LSU, that’s for sure. We do give really nice going away packages, though.

I just think—I know—that there’s a lot more that goes into these decisions than just “who will pay me the most?” and “is it easier to win championships there?” And the governor’s antics this past week sure haven’t helped matters. We may still get our guy, but I think his price has been upped at least.
