Why no mention of Jeff Traylor or Charles Huff? There are quality G5 coaches beyond Sumral

Everybody keeps acting like Jon Sumrall is the only strong G5-coach worth talking about, but why isn’t anyone bringing up Jeff Traylor or Charles Huff?
Traylor has built a legit program at UTSA Roadrunners — tough, disciplined, physical football. He recruits Texas like a monster, develops players, and wins games without the heavy resources others enjoy. That’s coaching.
And Huff? He took over at Southern Miss after they went 1-11 the season before his arrival. He dropped into a rebuild and already has them at 6-2 overall and 4-0 in the Sun Belt so far this year. With that kind of jump? That’s serious value.
Sumrall is great — nobody’s denying that — but acting like he’s the only answer is lazy thinking. There are multiple G5 guys doing more with less who deserve real discussion.
Open the lens a little. There’s talent out there besides the obvious names.

People acting like Huff just popped up at Southern Miss don’t know the résumé. What he did at Marshall is exactly why he’s climbing fast.
He didn’t inherit some powerhouse — he took over a solid G5 program and elevated it:
• Beat Notre Dame in South Bend — as a double-digit underdog.
You don’t “luck” into that. That’s prep, physicality, and culture.
• Consistently fielded a top-tier G5 defense.
Marshall wasn’t just winning — they were shutting people down.
• Elite roster building at a G5
He recruited real dudes, hit the portal with precision, and wasn’t scared to play young players early.
• Winning seasons every year
He didn’t take a step backward — he built steady, physical, SEC-style football.
He showed he could win, he showed he could recruit, and he showed he could build a program, not just ride momentum.
Now he’s at Southern Miss and already sitting 6–2 and 4–0 in the Sun Belt. That’s not a fluke — that’s the same blueprint working again.
People who only talk Sumrall are just box-checking.
Huff’s résumé stacks. He’s doing it twice now — different schools, different rosters, same results: toughness, recruiting, development, wins.
Some of y’all might want to broaden the search radius. There are killers in the G5 beyond the obvious names.

Will have to settle for lower tier guys after this shite show

Lower tier doesnt mean low quality.

As a Southern Miss guy and former employee of the main booster at USM that fronted the bill for Huff. Please don’t take him. I want LSU to go back to prominence, but man I’m enjoying the USM bounce back. We’ve sucked since I went there during the Fedora/ Austin Davis days. I want both programs to be good lol.

Traylor is the Frank Wilson of Texas. I think he’s more fit for the ut job than LSU

Traylor will be UT or A&M’s coach one day IMO
I personally think he’s a star. But I’m also biased being from east texas

Huff is legit.
I've heard him talk and explain his coaching philosophy and what he wants in a program.

These guys don't really have a history of working in big boy football. Just a different mindset. He's a great candidate for a lower tier like a Kentucky

Huff needs to move up a tier. If Sumrall gets a better gig Tulane would be a perfect stepping stone for him.

Huff is a former Bama assistant under Saban. It’s clear you don’t know what you’re talking about.

Tulane and Southern Miss are both G5.

Honestly, sounding sooooo East Texas like he does in interviews might be an issue with people judging how he would handle the boosters and media pressures of a high visibility program.

Huff pretty much got fired from Marshall. They wanted him out

You quoted my comment about Traylor, not Huff

Which was beyond retarded considering they won their first conference championship in a decade.
He took like 26 guys from that team with him to USM. USM was 1-11 and 0-8 in conference play last year. They're 6-2 and 4-0 this year.

This right here. The alternative is a tiny pool of safe vets. The “we-need-a-whale” approach lends itself to a compromised search not a comprehensive one. We should be turning over every rock because we’re LSU. It’s flawed thinking to boast that because we’re LSU we exclude fringe candidates. Getting the best from a multitude of applicants seems better to me than getting the best from the upper crust. The process of making a selection and the selection itself can be tainted if we’re going to be snobs about it.
