Sankey implores NCAA to axe ruling allowing pro-sports betting

The SEC has asked the NCAA to rescind a pending rule change that will allow athletes and athletic department staff members to bet on professional sports beginning on Nov. 1, according to a copy of a memo obtained by ESPN.
SEC commissioner Greg Sankey sent a letter to NCAA president Charlie Baker on Oct. 25, stating that during an Oct. 13 conference meeting, "The message of our Presidents and Chancellors was clear and united: this policy change represents a major step in the wrong direction."

Last week, the NCAA's Division I cabinet approved a rule change to allow betting on professional sports, and Division II and III management councils also signed off on it, allowing it to go into effect on Saturday. NCAA athletes are still prohibited from betting on college sports and sharing information about college sports with bettors. Betting sites also aren't allowed to advertise or sponsor NCAA championships.
"On behalf of our universities, I write to urge action by the NCAA Division I Board of Directors to rescind this change and reaffirm the Association's commitment to maintaining strong national standards that keep collegiate participants separated from sports wagering activity at every level," Sankey wrote. "If there are legal or practical concerns about the prior policy, those should be addressed through careful refinement -- not through wholesale removal of the guardrails that have long supported the integrity of games and the well-being of those who participate."

He's right. It's only a matter of time before every major sport gets crushed w/gambling scandals. The NBA is scared shitless right now about what's coming out and that should extend to every single league and conference.

Is this where we act like gambling and game fixing is any way new?
Posted on 10/28/25 at 2:50 pm to Mingo Was His NameO
It's not new but the incentive to do it has increased exponentially b/c of the explosion in gambling in sports the last decade and it's going to get really bad if nothing is done to head it off now.

Agree with Sankey. Let the players bet. The leagues are fixing games anyway, oftentimes through officials if not players and coaches. Everyone should get to make money. Entertainment and all that.
Besides, anyone with a brain already knows the SEC is corrupt.

I have no idea why you would let college football players bet on pro football when they may eventually play in that league or might have former teammates already playing in the league

The incentive is less because you’ll actually get caught
And athletes, including in college, are making more than ever, more reason they don’t have to do this.
Socialists can’t use logic

It's already here
Now more games are being affected than ever. fixers have access to players via nil.
I watched a game. And shite was so bad, literally like the fix was on. Then 2nd half. Back to normality.
Now we have to wonder, did QB throw that horrible int, where his wr never had a chance on purpose? I mean his buddy. Could of had 10k. On the over of 1/2. ints
Pandoras box has been opened

The incentive has always been there, it's more so about the accessibility.

Michael Franzese, former captain in the Colombo Family whose father was way up in the Family, now retired from the lifestyle, is saying on his podcast that gambling has always been the main money maker for the Mob. Prohibition was huge but eventually faded away with its end, but gambling was, and will be, always around. "It's never going away". He says that allowing athletes to bet on pro sports would be a huge mistake. It's opening a door that will never be closed again. That the Mob is all for it says all we need to know". A few other tidbits on this & other of his podcasts: he won't say he knows who killed Hoffa, but would say, in response to questions about his body, that it's "wet & deep". Mob was 100001 % behind JFK's murder, along with the CIA. Jack Ruby was 10001 % mobbed up, opposite what the Warren Commission "lied about"...... A big reason RFK crossed the Mob on the deal to give JFK the Illinois vote in that Presidential election....in exchange for RFK's Justice Dept. backing off on the Mob was that he, Kennedy was having an affair with Marilyn Monroe & a Mob member was banging her, too. Pissed, he directed his DOJ to go after the Mob anyway.

Why would a leader of a major conference push for it?
Think outside of the box here.
They may also be trying to get ahead of something. The SEC firing a crew is also out of the ordinary.

If you ever had a question about D1 and NFL being fixed, this should answer it. D1 players are mad they can't bet on and profit from NFL games that they know are fixed, meanwhile NFL players CAN bet on and profit from CFB games they know are fixed
also lol @ that guy supposedly excommunicado from his mob family being vehemently against it on a podcast. he's 100% still involved and they 100% do not want this happening as it will decimate their profits. we got the mafia out here making pods for public lobbying efforts

Yeah, it’s just a wide open invitation to corruption. It’s actually probably a bigger issue for the pro leagues, as that’s where the integrity of the sport is most compromised, but collegiate athletics should be proactive here too.

I think the biggest issues is that they get into debt or become dependent on betting as a source of income, so they become more incentivized to corrupt the games they're playing in or have friends/relatives playing in.

Saying they can’t bet on any sports is the type of thing that causes you to lose lawsuits and opened up much bigger problems
The tune should be no betting on college sports and no betting on pro sports that is the same sport that you play / coach. That addresses concerns about future paybacks / info sharing

Franzese has been out of the Mafia lifestyle for right at 25 years. Catch one of main podcasts & you'll believe him. Two other former mobsters confirm his story. He found his faith while in prison & spends his time talking to troubled kids & all 3 of the main pro sports teams pay him to speak to all their teams Rather doubtful if he was still involved with the Mob. At his peak, he had 19 bookies working for him, mostly in the N.East & said serious gamblers will always use bookies, as there is no form of regulation. He was pretty blunt in the Mob not worried about legalized gambling. They feel this opens up huge new "clients". He was not "excommunicated" from the Mob, he walked away because of his own convictions.

I never said anything about legalized gambling, I'm talking about him being against players that know how the racket really works being allowed to take part, as that cuts into their profits

No. This isn’t what’s happening. But no surprise you’ve missed it lol
