Gov. Jeff Landry urges rejection of New Orleans' request for $125M loan amid budget crisis

BULLYING {ON} OFF
quote:
Gov. Jeff Landry is urging state leaders to reject New Orleans' emergency request for what amounts to a $125 million payday loan as the city grapples with a budget crisis that threatens its ability to make payroll.
The city needs the approval of the State Bond Commission -- which is scheduled to meet Thursday -- to sell revenue bonds for the quick cash infusion.
But Landry in a social media post Tuesday came out against the proposal and urged Republican leaders in the state Legislature to join him.
He also suggested appointing a fiscal administrator to oversee the city's fiscal affairs.
"It is imperative that (New Orleans) address its financial matters promptly," the governor said. He added that the Legislature's Republicans, many of whom serve as commissioners on state Bond Commission, should "deny the city's request to accumulate debt on the backs of its citizens."

My heart has been torn asunder with concern for the fiscal concerns of New Orleans government.

Might as well give money to a drunkard to attend AA.

Good lord, is the tourism capital of the gulf south that poorly mismanaged?

He is correct. throwing more money at the problem will not fix the problem, only delay and encourage the problem. taking fiscal responsibility away from the city and installing a fiscal administrator is the correct answer....

Yes
NOLA elected Latoya after it came out during her first mayoral campaign that she had charged a bunch of personal expenses to her city council credit card. Of course she reimbursed the city for those expenses AFTER the news reported on it all.
Then they have a current city councilman who previously resigned his city council seat in disgrace after pleading guilty to federal bribery charges. After a stint in federal prison, he gets back into politics and re-elected to the same position he was in when the feds busted him previously.
If NOLA voters want to vote for corruption and dysfunction, then let them reap the consequences of it.

John Fleming, one of the conservative challengers to Bill Cassidy for 2026, is the current State Treasurer and chairs the Bond Commission.
Julie Emerson, who officially declared yesterday her intention to also run for Cassidy's Senate seat, is one of those Republican Legislators who serves on the Bond Commission.
$100 said Gov. Landry is coming out with this now mostly, if not solely, to have a wedge issue for social/cultural conservatives in the race. Emerson is his candidate, she will absolutely vote NO. If Fleming votes YES, or even if he just can't even stop the majority of the commission from voting YES, Landry camp will use it against him.
See the 24 months prior to the 2023 LA Gov Election with Landry suddenly initiating childish spats with then-State Treasurer John Schroder, even trying to take credit for stuff Schroder had every intention of his office implementing before Landry tweetered about the subject.
None of the above is an attempt to promote, or negete, any merits of the loan. Just stating we've seen this movie before from the Governor.

Is this a serious question? Are you new here?

Helena Moreno takes over in January as Mayor, correct?
Wonder if there would be a reconsideration of this request after Cantrell is gone.

Yea, that's just stupid and a glaring problem with the dumbing down of voters, particularly Democrat voters.
The democrat party has not changed on bit. "Keep'em stupid, and keep'em dependent"
I hope the do deny the request. Stop rewarding ignorance.

Give em the frickin money so the residents don't move to other parts of the state and make them shitholes too.

In the last 12 months, they had some Taylor Swift concerts and a Super Bowl in N.O.
I guess that influx of dollars was not enough to offset Latoya Cantrell's obesity and incompetence?

I'm counting 14 members. Not sure if all 14 vote, or only 13 so that there can't be a tie.
Of those members, I'm seeing 6 for sure NO votes:
DeVillier (the Gov's choice for House Speaker)
Emerson
Henry (the Gov's choice for Sen. Prez)
Gov. Landry
AG Murrill
Billy Nungesser
I think this request gets denied. Treasurer Fleming may very well have already planned on pushing the Bond Commission to deny it even before Gov. Landry said anything.
Then some sort of loan request gets reconsidered after the new Mayor takes office.

New Orleans' finances were screwed up LONG before Latoya.

Not a Landry fan at all... but it will be nice to see him battle with the VIP elitist prog Mayor, Helena Moreno and her cabal of NOLA elitist Democrat VIPs over the next few years. They share mutual trial lawyer friends. So, wonder how that will play out.

Rhetorical question, right?

Isn’t the City Council over the budget anyway, including the Mayor-Elect?

More like some “donors” paid it off for her after she assured them she would get them some no-bid contracts and do-nothing jobs.
I read the other day that one of the first things Helena Moreno saw when she started to transition into the office was how much deadweight Latoya had hired into City Hall. Does anyone think she didn’t make money off of those hires?
ETA: What Latoya really needs is a Roto-Rooter, in-depth IRS audit. I remember when she claimed she paid the city back for all of her “unethical“ first class flights and lodging, The check was written from Liberty Bank with the memo stating “loan." I’d like to see all the money going into and out of Latoya‘s accounts as well as her “donors.“
